FWIW, one could come kinda close to that Baldwin stock engine by mating the superstructure from the On30 2-8-0 to the Spectrum HO 2-8-0 mech.

I just ordered another 2-6-0 and an HO 2-8-0 w/ DCC just for this purpose.

Thanks for the suggestions. After a bit of running, one has quieted WAY down, the other is getting there. I love these little locos...

On30 / On30 4-4-0- a little noisy
January 06, 2008, 07:09:34 PM
I have two of the new On30 4-4-0s. Both seem seem to have a little more (maybe gear) noise than most of my other Spectrum locos. One has a little more noise than the other. They both have Lenz Gold Series decoders installed in them. They have been lubed and greased. Will this noise fade as they break-in or is it a decoder setting I'm missing?

Wow!  There's truly some inspirational stuff on Carl's site!...I would love to have a how-to-do-it construction feature, complete with a series of photos, of a tiny On30 layout to run in our magazine (O Gauge Railroading)...I'm an On30 enthusiast myself, so after an absence of some months because I wasn't able to log in, I plan to visit here regularly.  And, in my new post, I'll always be looking for On30 layouts--of all sizes--that we can feature in the magazine.

Allan...are you serious about bringing On30 into the world of OGR? I do hope so...too bad my layout isn't up to snuff...

On30 / 4-4-0 delivery.

Bach-man, are we getting close to the delivery of the On30 4-4-0s? Any idea when they will arrive?

Personally I'd like to see a 2-6-2 or a 4-6-0 before another Shay. A 2-6-2 like the #26 at Allaire State Park in NJ would be perfect.

On30 / Re: On30 layout survey

Here's my new 4' X 6' layout...almost completed.

It's actually 44" X 72". The base is 1 1/2" thick, 2' X 8' tongue-and-groove foam board. The mountains are built up using foam board and spray foam. The smaller hills are spray foam. It's been built in two 22" X 72" sections that can separate for transport (not that it's going anywhere).

Time period is early 1900's shortline operations, including logging, mining, general freight and passenger service.
