General Discussion / Why the magnet?
April 07, 2018, 07:10:44 PM
My Golden Spikes set came with an inch-square magnet in a package.

I thumbed through the material that came with the set, but I don't see the magnet addressed.

What's the magnet for?

For $2.00 more this would be better:
https://www.amazon.com/Futurebatt-Adapter-Supply-Samsung-LTM1555B/dp/B074W1XVBL/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1522270880&sr=8-12&keywords=14V+AC+power+supply

Rated 3 amps, so it should handle just about any accessories you want to hook up to it.

I got that part, cut off the plug to turn them into wire leads, hooked it up and IT WORKED!

That is, it has powered the turnout. I haven't tried it actually hooked up to the system yet, still waiting on a few tracks.

So far, so good! Thanks again.

And there it is. Thanks man!

Would something like this work? There are adapters that go to these plugs that you can hook wire-leads into.

And this is what's looking for power, hooked up to 6 stacked non-DCC remote turnout switches.

I've assumed this power booster will do the trick in terms of handling several 3 DCC locomotives and several turnouts. The turnouts simply hooked up to the red/white terminals, while the EZ Command connected by the audio-like cord.

Correct?

Nothing a little reading won't help.

I see the switches actually plug into each other, so that eliminates the "stacking of terminals".

All I really need is a suggested power source.

General Discussion / Powering the remote turnouts.
March 26, 2018, 04:06:19 PM
The Bachmann remote-turnouts are wired in green with a plug, that I assume plugs into the remote. Then there a red double-wire with a plug on one side and horseshoe terminals on the other end, that I've assumed plug into the other side of the remote with the horseshoe terminals screwed into a power source.

Exactly, what power-source should I purchase to power 6 turnouts that I have on my layout? And do I just stack those horseshoe terminals from each turnout?

Sorry for the stupid questions, but you'll need to explain it to me like I'm a 6-year old. A picture would even be better.  ;D

I have 7 of these #6 turnouts on my layout, and they all work like a charm.

Got my Golden Spike set today. Set it up no problem, train ran with no problem, through the frog and everything. My anxiety on going Bachmann to start just went away. I think it's going to be great starter set, I'm going to have a decent layout to cover about 3 x 6.

General Discussion / Re: Insulated joint and gaps

Can you create a block/zone simply by running wires to a toggle from one side of the plastic rail gaps back to the other side - to isolate a spur for example?

General Discussion / Re: 2 EZ Commands?

Thanks people.

Honestly, I'm making a simple layout that will probably fit in a 3 X 6 area - two connecting ovals, maybe 2 spurs, one turning into a rail yard.

Don't plan on more than 2 locomotives at a time running.

From what I've gathered so far, the EZ Command ought to be able to handle all of that. Having 2 separate throttles isn't a big deal, and should I decide to expand, I'll just spring for a system that can do that.

Thanks again.

So, you just can't tap in to the wires between the audio plug and the flat plug?

Don't let it overwhelm you. We were all beginners once. And no matter what anybody tells you, this hobby is way too big for one person to completely master. Just concentrate on learning the basics you need to get things up and running. Once you do that, you can concentrate your energy and money on what interests you most.

Appreciated. Hopefully, next year at this time I can answer questions instead of asking. I've got time. My wife has money. I'm going to give it a shot.

General Discussion / Insulated joint and gaps
March 17, 2018, 07:02:04 PM
I'm guessing no difference in concept, but that "insulated joints" are where tracks are joined with plastic instead of metal, and gaps are actual "gaps" cut into the track.

Close?

And further more, if "frogs" need gaps and/or insulated joints around them (no matter what the case), why don't manufacturers already make them with gaps?

Thanks everyone.

The knowledge I'm gaining already indicates I could be in over my head.

I'm a "starter", so we'll see how it goes. This stone has rolled, I've got some $600+ worth of n scale crap coming in within the coming days.
