HO / DCC & Sound for Acela Loco "Not the HHP Loco"
January 14, 2017, 08:39:26 AM
Hello Everyone.... I have a slight problem / issue Friday afternoon my dad came over & my neighbor for an operating session on my layout. MY dad has an Acela Set he picked up a long time ago from a Train Show that no longer is run "maybe some of you old timers heard of it" The Broken Rail Train show held @ Goodman Campus Rauch Field house on Lehigh U in Bethlehem PA I Believe it only lasted 2 years.

Anyways My Dad loves to run his Acela when he comes for operating sessions & about 3 years ago I took my dads Loco to get a Sound & DCC decoder installed I took it to a HS that has closed up. I Paid the guy $ 200.00 up front to install the Decoder & did not get the Loco back for another 6 weeks & constant messages left with the guy. Well to find out the Loco only has a Idling sound to it No throttle up no nothing else just a very faint horn. That night I took the Loco to a different HS & the Train Tech popped off the shell & said he did not recognize the Decoder Brand & asked who did the install I stated the guys name & the guy said to me I got Robbed Blind & the guy was a CON-MAN.. & went on to say wile working @ the HS he stole many clients Locos took out the good stuff & would re install less quality grade stuff. 1 reason that HS closed down... He also said that guy is under court orders he can not go to any Train Show or inside any Train show within the courts limits... GREAT Now what.

The Train Tech suggested I got on hear & to ask what if any DCC sound decoder can be used he did not have an answer for a replacement. He did say to try TCS WOW decoders.. Can anyone help me find a good replacement sound decoder....

HO / Re: HO Shay Universal Drive Shaft Popping Out
January 14, 2017, 08:13:16 AM
Like WoundedBear stated Shay's are a tricky Loco to handle & little problems with there operation like you are experiencing is 1 of the reasons no Shays run on my layout. Not that I don't like Shay's I DO it's just I don't want to deal with there operational issues.

What you can do though take a section of roadbed & attach a section of track to the roadbed & when you are moving your Shay's To & From the track. Just put your made track up against your layout track & slide your Shay onto your layout track same for when you remove the loco... I believe there is a product out on the market that does the same was what I suggested but I don't know the exact name of it...

Nice find... Most LHS around this time of year offer Clearance sales & % off sales to make room for the new products coming out this year... My HS just started a 35% sale on all HO & N scale related stock I just picked up 3 PRR Box Car's off Bachmann's Sliver Series lineup... I got 3 Bachmann PRR Passenger Cars in Tuscan red scheme & lighted interiors for Christmas "Nice Cars"

Thinking of picking up a Bachmann DC NY Central Shark Nose Engine I seen my HS had & throwing in a DCC & Sound decoder I have...

Looks Pretty Good.... But I would gotten a full sheet of plywood... Plywood is cheap this way you could of put a full piece in where you needed it. Instead of shoe horning it in with a bunch of scrap wood but I understand everyone is on a budget.

Maybe your Loco lost the Programming. I would try re programming your Loco on a main line track ( if your equipment has that option) Or if you have a programming track try that or if your Loco is running fine there is a chance you turned off the sound or the sound got shut off maybe you hit a button on your controller by chance. I have done that a few times myself turn off my locos sound by hitting a button on my remote.

I snagged a 'New In Box' Bachmann LS "S.C.Ruffey" for $10 at a local thrift shop yesterday. Still had the coupler height adjustment pieces and directions in the box.

You never know what you'll find unless you go look. Sometimes there's gold buried under the junk.

Well after a lot of internet searches for LVRR or PRR passenger cars... I decided to order 4 Passenger Cars in PRR from Bachmann's Sliver Series line up From my Hobby Shop

I got 4
72" Heavyweight Coach's w lighted interior PRR Tuscan Red #4536  & 1 Observation Car #136

I am going to scratch off the last # & remake #'s 37 & 38
So my consist will be 4536 - 4537 - 4538

The Passenger Car's are very nicely painted & Detailed nicely they work well on my layout & the interior lighting lights up the cars well & can see the details inside nicely the lights do not Flicker at all its a constant lighting ( witch I like very much )

I thank everyone for there input & posts

These locos do not have DCC or sound. The control comes from the phone and the sound plays from the phone not the locomotive. You can however modify things to how you desire depending on your abilities.

AND it is DCC (Digital command control), NOT DDC

Thanks for the info I thought the Loco itself was DCC & Sound I have a Local Train Club that I take my Locos to for DCC Sound install (the train tech is very good at installing sound) I still might pick one up @ the hobby shop yet. How well do they work my Layout is 17ft long x 6ft wide has 21 switches total and I have a 9 track storage yard.

If you cant find the replacement parts... I would try to use pantographs from an old Trolly car at this stage I would say that's about your only option. unless you can find the parts I'd check @ mom & pop hobby shops too.

E-Z App / Bachmann EZ-APP Loco's
November 09, 2016, 06:47:55 AM
Thinking of buying a Bachmann F-7 Loco equipped with the Bachmann EZ-APP just wondering if anyone has a Loco with the EZ-APP. How well does it work with a Cell Phone (I have an android cell) Do you need Wi-Fi or Internet for Loco to work. Is Loco DDC & Sound

My Hobby Shop just got a few Bachmann EZ-APP Loco's In for the Christmas Season & I am thinking of picking 1 up. The Loco's look pretty good in detail But with some light Weathering Loco's would look awesome.

The Hobby Shop owner said he picked a few Loco's up to see if they would sell over the Christmas season & for the fact the Loco runs off an APP on your cell phone. & might be a Hit for Tech Savvy Kid's...

Thanks

There's Junk Sold @ Train Meet's too.
There's a Train meet twice a year in my Area called I believe

The 1st Frost Train Meet  &   The Spring Thaw
Held @ the Allentown PA - AG Hall   Maybe some of you have been there

I went to that meet 1 time paid the $7.00 admission fee but was overly disappointed with the show
89% of the show was all Big Scale Stuff & the Few HO Guys that had tables there wanted a small fortune for there stuff & it was mainly Junk. What a waist if you ask me I don't care about the $7.00 but mainly the Show itself.

From experience unless you get up very early you are not going to find trains at those front lawn junk sales many call yard sales.  Reason very simple mention the word train and the early birds come in and scoo them up.  At least that's what happened at my yard sale.  Even the train set stuff was gone.

I agree I stopped @ a local Yard sale in my neighborhood & the woman was selling (Life Like & TYKO) HO Rolling Stock. Cheap 50 Cents a car A few looked OK but I can tell by looking not worth even the 50 cents she was asking for each car.

FYI... The Passenger cars I had but wound up throwing them out was (Hand Me Down's) Maybe that's why that person did not want them for his layout anymore. But anyway new Trucks & Steel Wheels could not help those cars
