Title: gear noise on a 2 truck shay
Post by: piper_tim on January 30, 2011, 04:25:28 PM
Hi all,
Just got a 2 truck shay, but there is a "high spot" that makes a noise every time this high spot is hit.  Will this wear in with a break-in period or should I send it back?

Tim,

Only time will tell, it may wear in, or it may be the beginning of cracked-gear syndrome, common to the Bachmann Shays and Climaxes in both On30 and HO, and also the On30 Railtruck. This is also a well-known malady in many brass locos and some HO diesels. Bachmann has released a replacement gear set for the Shay, which may fix the problem, and NWSL has released steel replacement gears for both the Bachmann HO and On30 Shays which might be even better. The Climaxes and On30 Railtrucks are still waiting for help with this problem.

Regards, Bill
