General Discussion / Air Brakes
January 19, 2010, 08:39:55 AM
In a modern air brake system, does each car (passenger or freight) have its own pressurized air reserve? Or is there one large pressure reserve on the engines that is used for all the cars? Also, does the air pressure applied RELEASE the brake or APPLY the brake? For example, I think a truck has its parking brake applied with springs and then the air pressure actually RELEASES the brake. Thanks.

Hope I'm not going out of bounds here but does anyone have a recommendation for a train simulator for Windows XP?

General Discussion / Upgrading Old Style Tyco Couplers
January 07, 2010, 02:05:20 PM
Hello again. I have a lot of Tyco Locos and rolling stock from the 1970's. The couplers do not work very well (springs are weak) and I'd like to convert them all to something better, or to something that is now commonly used in say, Bachmann or Athern type locos and cars. Is this going to be difficult? Where can I go to buy the new couplers? Mostly my current couplers are attached directly to the trucks. Thanks.

General Discussion / 1970 Tyco F-9 Mainenance
January 04, 2010, 01:22:51 PM
I have a Tyco F-9 loco from about 1970. It has been in storage now for all these years and I've just in the last couple of years taken it out at the holidays to run it and I wonder if I should somehow lubricate the motor. Thanks in advance. Jim

General Discussion / Tyco GP-20 Loco Died
January 04, 2010, 08:13:32 AM
Hello, This past weekend my 35 yr old Tyco GP-20 just stopped running. It is strange as for the past 6 weeks it was running really well and smooth and quiet, and now all it does it sits there. The headlight comes on really bright but no movement. I wonder if the motor just died of old age. I tried taking it apart to see if maybe the wire came undone but in prying the outer shell off it seemed like it might begin cracking so I stopped. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. At the time it died I was pulling three passenger lighted cars and I think one of these cars might have had a small short in it and I wonder if this could have led to the demise of my loco. If it died of old age it's ok; 35 years of service is not bad. But it has nostalgic and sentimental value.

General Discussion / Amtrak 85' Passenger Coach
January 03, 2010, 02:26:40 AM
Hello,
Are the 85' passenger coaches too long for an 18" radius curve? If so are there any other good lighted passenger coaches you would recommend? My old Tyco PA RR lighted passenger coach from the 1960's has a short in it and I'd like to replace it, but I really would like a lighted coach. Can I add lighting easily to another type of coach? Thanks. Jim
