Thomas & Friends / Re: Thomas and Friends dcc

I am a Newbie, and with that sometimes comes odd and maybe dumb remarks, but here goes.

Is Bachmann missing something here?  Is DCC not the future and perhaps even the present of MR?  Why would anyone not release a new product at least DCC ready?   ???  As a new modeler I would buy nothing, not at the very least, DCC ready.

I'm confused and maybe misguided, but there it is.

I've read the threads not only here, but on the MR forums about how difficult the install is, and not for a first timer.  If the engine were produced dcc ready that might convince me to give it a shot.  But I can buy a dcc equipped Spectrum 4-4-0 for less than it will cost to buy a Thomas and decoder.   :o

I'd like to run a Thomas, but not that bad.  Sounds a bit crazy to me.

Unfortunately for Bachmann I went the way of least resistance.  I purchased the Roundhouse 4-4-0 unmarked with dcc and sound already installed.  It may not be a Tsunami, but that little engine is very nice.  I added my own B&M markings.  I have no complaints.  It simply came down to the all mighty dollar for me.  I could not justify double the cost for a Spectrum with the Tsunami added.   A little weathering here and there, and she looks and sounds great.

Put me down for a dcc & sound equipped 4-6-0!   Where do I send the check?

Does the same method apply to the dcc equipped Spectrum 4-4-0?  Simply unplug the existing decoder and plug in an eight pin sound decoder?  Assuming the sizing of the decoder and speaker fit.

Thanks.  I have the Proto 2000, and need a second for my additional switching yard I'm adding.

Sorry, I was typing so fast I got all crossed up.  I was trying for 1920 and I have a Proto 2000 0-6-0.  The 4-4-0 may not be totally correct for that late, but it looks very cool!

I don't know how period correct I am, as I too am just starting out, but here's my current list for modeling the southern NH B&M in 1900.

Roundhouse 4-4-0 running 36' wood reefers
Bachmann Spectrum 2-8-0 running passenger cars and freight
Bachmann Spectrum 0-6-0 in the switching yard

All this is on a J shaped 4' x 24' layout.

Is this available dcc ready?  I need a 0-6-0 or 0-8-0 plug and play for dcc and sound.

The Roundhouse is a closer example of what I'm modeling, which is B&M #494 currently residing in VT.  It looks like I'd actually have to do more work to the Bachmann ( Oil lamp, misc. details, adding sound, etc. ).  A little detail and some graphite paint on the boiler and the Roundhouse is pretty close.

I can live with either, so I need to flip a coin.

Does Bachmann plan to introduce these with the sound already from the factory?

Why does this particular Spectrum model not have it already added?  It seems that all the other Spectrum's do.

Ok guys convince me.  Why should I spend the same money for a Bachmann 4-4-0 that I need to spend an additional $80 - $120 to install sound in if I can get a Roundhouse 4-4-0 with sound already installed?
