Hello back, Jack

Yes I do it for fun, got started when I realized no one could tell me which Big Hauler 4-6-0's had version 5 chassis, since I wanted to bid on them on Ebay.  It evolved from there and I started building detailed databases and set lists.  In 1998 I learned about Wade Colyer who was doing the same thing. We have become great friends over the years and help each other out keeping up to date.

Wade actually collects all 1:22.5 items, and has nalmost every item except the very latest . I wrothe a book about Bachmann  G Scale and tried to get it published but have never had any luck.  The narrative is out of date now, because of my poor eyesight, but I have kept up all the databases so far.

Everytime Wade & I thinks we know it all we get a suprise or two which makes it fun.

It is also fun to get asked questions by Bachmann Industries about their own Products.  They have tried to be helpful, but their records are not very complete.

All in all, I have met a lot of neat folks doing this project, it also helps to be a,little LOCO pun intended.

Cheers

Bill

Here you go!

Bachmann made this special set fo rWeil-Mclain Boiler Company, an Indiana boiler company.  they were purchased by Weil -Mclain to use as givaways to their distributors and wholesalers.  They were never sold in retail stores.  The loco in the set is the Version 1 Radio Controlled Big Hauler locomotive with batteries in the bioler, the WM boxcar and the Santa Fe Bobber caboose.  A WM company source told me they were purchased in two batches. the first being in 1990 or 1991.  The second batch was the same as the first with the exception of the caboose. IN the second batch the caboose was lettered with the word Blackman in big block letters on the side.  Blackmann was a wholesaler of plumbing supplies and also used the sets as givaways to their dealers.

The WM Boxcar and Blackman Caboose were never available as seperate items and only available with the sets.  I do not know for sure but I believe there are no more than 1000 pieces of the Boxcar and less for  the Blackman caboose.

Although the box was marked with the words: Contractors Collector
Series Set No 3, there has never been a set 1 or 2.  The set and special cars were never in the catalog.

I have seen these set go for as little as $85 and as high as $210 on Ebay.  I have not looked lately, but prices seem to be down on average on Ebay.

You can put it in a search, that when it grts a hit will email you to let you know to look.  No wasted time that way, it is fast and simple. Go to Bachamnn then WP&Y spelled out and initials.   I have posted a list of all the BachamnnWP&y items in another post.  Do a search on Loco Bill and you will find it.

You could try calling Bachmann, they have helped me in the past with parts not on their sale list.  Best to use the regular number rather than the 800 number.

Hi Kipp ,

It was In the catalog from 1997 to 1999. The loco has either chassis 3 or 4.  You are correct on the two additional cars.

Definitely a striking great looking set!!

Enjoy

Wade,

I can't come to York,  too much going on and I have to go in for repairs!!   Got to get four different eye surgeries.  ON top of that I need another surgery that us old times seem to need with old age.   The eye problems have made my surfing too tough, and that is why I missed that 90070C set, I'm just sick about it.  I can hardly keep up with this forum.

Not sure how long my recoveries will take, but expect them to keep me off the net for awhile after each one.

Like my Dad said at 93, old age sucks!!!!  Sheez, I'm only 70.

Dave, you do have to beware on Ebay, in the instance of this set the seller says it is new and he may be right, but it is also possible that something not seenin the picture is broken or dmaged in some way. You never know.  In this case I believe the locomotive is from 1990 or 1991 .  I those days the gears were so poor that hey didn't seem to last very long.

I have actually seen nice Bachmann sets sell for $80 or 90 and be real buys.  If you are going to run the train as opposed to displaying it, it is best to only buy sets made after 2000 when bachmann came out with the smooth running version 5 chassis.  If the cars in the set have metal wheels then it is almost always made after 2000.

Ask the seller when he bought it, ask if the cars have metal wheels, if he can't or won't answer don't bid.  In spite of this advice there may be problems anyway, you never know.

Good luck bidding, Bachmann sets after 2000 are usuall great buys and as you said the prices are pretty good.

Wade,

I have heard about that set for years, but know nothing about it nor have I ever seen one until now.  One of my sources said it was sold on the Home Shopping Network but I have no way of confirming it.  His description to me was almost exactly the same except he did not mention that it had  a caboose.  the  SF passenger car which I am assuming is the combine was included. I concluded that it was nothing more than the Red Comet set as the description seemed to be identical to that.  I can't find an additional note I had on it, but I somehow estimated the date of the set to be 1990 or 1991, so it had the older chassis.

In any case the addition of a caboose and the name American Freight Express and the 90070C is totally new to me.

The new Prospector set 90070 in 2010 has the Davenport & mine cars!

Just when you think you have something solved we get a new mystery.

I am hoping you won it so we can get pictures of the packaging and can confirm then number.   Let me know!!!!!!!!!

Hi Wade,

I'm Looking for it too,  Seems that the Bach-man said it woulf be late in the year , but before Christmas.

Maybe he will read this and give us a better update.

I heard from a source in London that they were expected there at the end of October.

The only 3-4-2 with a No. 19 was the Union Pacific 2-4-2 with tender.  They were made starting in 1989 and remained in the catalog until 1993, Since they are so long out of production I do not think parts are available, based on Bachmann's responses to others with the same problem.  I have the 2-4-2T and it is still going so far, and I love it

Some of our members have reported fixing a split gear using regular JB Weld as opposed to the 5 minute variety, but I don't know how well it held up.  It could be worth a try.

Good Luck

Large / Re: Finding the on switch?

Scott,  There is no On/off switch on the loco.  If the lights come on that means power is being successfully sent to  the internal wiring.  If the lights get brighter the more you increase the power it means your power pack is OK.   It has been a long while since I have had one apart, you could have anything fron a loose or corroded wire to the motor, or a bad motor.  Try getting to the motor and internal wiring to check things out.   If you hear a humming sound like the engine is trying to run then you may have a jammed gear.   If the motor is running and the loco won't move it is definitely a gear problem.

Sorry I can't help much, but it is the best I can do with the symptoms so far.  Maybe some one else has better Ideas than mine or had one apart recently.
