Title: G scale ballast
Post by: SteveWard3928 on March 14, 2012, 03:10:22 AM
Ok I am building a garden railroad (1st time).  I have dug a 2-3 inch  trench and filled it with ballast. I have the track on the ballast and it is about 2 inches above the ground.

My problem is the ballast has an attitude and some of that ballast falls to the ground.  What can I use to keep the ballast from moving, or how do you keep your ballast in place?

Buy a bag of Dry Mortar mix and mix your ballast on a 6-1 ratio. Put the ballast down, bed your track in a little and then give it all a light sprinkle of water. You can add a little grey cement colouring to the dry mix as the mortar tends to make the ballast a bit of a light colour.1 tablespoon per bucket should do the trick.  I used this method on my Garden Railway and its lasted for years.
