Hey B-Man!
I hope your summer is starting off great! Speaking of summer and starting off..... what's the latest on the release of the Long Caboose? It's almost June and the crew of the Kansas Central & Colorado RR are getting "antsy" waiting for it! It seems they are tired of just running short "bobbers" and are really looking forward to those new long beauties! We are hosting the Wichita Area Garden Railway Society's June meeting on the third weekend and the railroad management was dearly hoping to have the new caboose for display and demonstration purposes. Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated!
Sincerely,
Steve Stockham
CEO KC&CRR
If you go to my May 20th, 2009 board, it my help you.
Yep, I missed that one! Of course, it would be more helpful if the "official" Bachmann spokesman would confirm or deny this "mid-July" release date! Considering that many of us are gearing up for the BTS, the 25th NGRS, HAGRS as well as local club events and open houses, one would think that an update as to what month we can expect them wouldn't be too much to expect from Bachmann! It's been over six months since the original speculated release date as posted by Bachmann! I fully understand that the realities of production may force delays but if, as your source claims, the Long Caboose is due in about six weeks, then something should be known by Bachmann's marketing department! Respectfully, continued silence doesn't help our "anticipation!"
Well, I couldn't wait. I bought an Accucraft brass version instead. And then I built the Sheridan short-wheelbase model.
I still have a couple of the Bachmann versions on back-order, but over here in UK I have to guess that I won't see them this year.
A great pity there.
tac, disappointed

For me anticipation really sucks big time , 6 more weeks maybe, but on the Back Man's side, I can't expect him to know all release dates and ever thing else we throw at him.......... Or can I / We.
Dear Steve,
I hope they'll be here soon. We did receive samples last week. We'll post pctures as available.
Have fun!

I see that the release date has been pushed out again. This time until September. This according to the 120pointme blogspot most recent post >:( >:( >:( >:(
I know it's frustrating to have to wait but boy! will the wait be worth it!! I saw the production sample pics at the BTS (courtesy of Large Scale on Line) and there is no doubt that the wait will be worth it!! :o ;D

This is incorrect. They should be here soon. They've been shipped from the factory and it shouldn't be too much longer until they arrive in Philadelphia.
Hi Bucksco,
Sure like your info better than the Bachmann Rep at the BTS He was the fellow who said by September. ;D ;D ;D

Sir, what does that say for those of us who live in the UK? When can WE expect to see them? ???
Don't have to be too accurate about the month - which YEAR would be good. ;)

I'm putting all my faith in my informant at Bachmann and an anticipating the release date for mid July. Any takers ? And anticipition still sucks big time, around 3 more weeks to go....................
I have a "race" going--I have a Bachmann caboose ordered from one dealer and an HOn3 long caboose (Blackstone) coming from another dealer. From past items I suspect both may be coming from the same factory--going to see which one gets here first. gj 8^)

Would Thomas and Friends be on the same boat?
cale
Thomas and Friends won't be shipping for a couple of months but I do have production samples of Thomas, Percy and their consists for photography. I'll post some pictures soon!
Dear All,
The cabooses are on the water. Subsequent to the BTS our VPs went to Hong Kong, and sent the update posted by Bucksco. They will be here soon. So the "by September" estimate has now been updated by Mr. Reece.
Have fun!

To The Bach mann,
I knew I could count on the you to come threw. Looks like my sourse for mid July my be right after all...Yea and wooho.... Can we will still have these pictures you mentioned about, that would be nice.

To all narrow gauge rs, of the D&RG Western, and Southern.
The August 2009 Garden Railways Magazine shows on page 8, a photo of the D&RG Southern long Caboose and it's specifications. Then on page 25, St. Aubin trains shows the same with an interior photo and a selling price of $152.99 US.
I am still hopping my source is correct and the cabooses will be for sale by mid month. Hope that slow boat to China is faster on its return trip.
Anticipation still sucks big time, but I am trying to be patent.

all things that are worth waiting for have the same inpatients attached to them that most people find very difficult to deal with. wait another year and that shiny new caboose will be replaced with waiting for the next new offering one to the next year after year.

Your not helping
sorry mudhen, i want one as bad as everyone. i was just trying to make us feel better about being greedy humans wanting everything yesterday. at my age i wish today was yesterday. good day, bob.
Dido, Bob.
I guess someone had to say it, age really doesn't have a thing to do with it. All railway children are the same. weather your 5 or ?? years young. Agreed ?.
My special source ( insider ) has only 3 more days to come through on the mid July delivery dead line date, I was told of. Then it's telephone time for an other up date.
Long Cabooses;
Go to Products>Rolling Stock>Cabooses and the last 5 items are of the new long Cabooses. Price can be found cheaper in G-scale Mag ( Garden Railways ), but sill no release date!!!!!!
Well, we are now past mid July...where is the caboose?
I ordered my caboose, last January, from Micro Mark...$148.00
Where are they? On the way of course! I had a chance to look at the production model at the NGRC. I checked it over thoroughly and I can state unequivocably that this is going to be the nicest piece of rolling stock that Bachmann has ever produced by far!! (the engines are not included in this - I'm talking about the cars.) The wait will be worth it. Try to be patient.
Micro Mark is out of NJ...close to Bachmann in Philly
www.micromark.com
It is almost August any up-date to delivery time?????

How about "it gets here when it gets here." It's not like we're waiting for a heart transplant.
Give the Bach Man and Bachmann a break.

Hay Bach Man:
Anticipation is one thing but now it's time to come clean, I am only saying what others are thinking. Where is the Long Caboose. Bachmann Industries has it now on the products page as it is for sale. Now 5 days until the end of the month, is the boat in ?, is it in your warehouse ? What ???????
Would just like an honest answer / reply
Thanks
I agree. I did not want to ask again because of the last comment made when I asked before. But Bach man do you have a time table? The place I ordered mine from has been invoiced for them but has not recieved them yet
Mike
I just might need a heart replacement if I hear once more, anticipate, they will be here by end off the month. This message is for James Thomas
??? :-[ :o any answer would be great
Mike
Probably the boat sunk. They do that from time to time... But some cargo may wash ashore by September;-))) Best wishes, Zubi
Sometimes containers get held up for inspection but that doesn't mean it won't get here before September ;)
P.S.
It will be worth the wait!
So stop bugging Bachmann and start asking your dealer! gj 8^))
Why would a dealer have an answer before Bachmann????????
If the question got answered then the questions would stop.
Mike
To :Mike M. ,
You are 100% correct. If the Bach Mann man And Mr Bucksco would just answer, when they would arrive, this questioning would stop.
Mr Bucksco the picture of your K-27 and undecorated caboose look great .
Worth the wait would be right. looks like you have yours.
Perhaps if Bach Mann and Jack Lynch (Buckso) actually knew the answer, they would tell you, don't you think? They probably are at the mercy of the manufacture, just like we are.
I, like the rest of you, am waiting patiently.
Are we there yet? Are we there yet?
Just waiting for them to arrive at the back door at this point. Hold on - it won't be long.
They're Here!!!!!!!!! oh, wait, Here ain't There....
http://120pointme.blogspot.com/2009/08/if-only-you-lived-in-japan.html
looks like Dan is still on the job.
Dear All,
I said they're on the water. How am I to know where the vessel is, or how long US Customs will hold the container when it arrives? We will happily let you know when the container arrives in our yard in Philly. And, in response to another site's criticism, Japan is somewhat closer to Hong Kong, hence the shorter delivery time to that happy island. As they so accurately point out, our models have almost 8,000 more miles to travel before Customs gets them.
We are as anxious as you are for you (and us!) to get them!
Have fun!
the Bach-man
Some of you are like door-to-door salesmen---just will not take NO(news) for an answer!!!
Eric UK
I forgot to say "best wishes from Tokyo;-)))))" Zubi
.....And there's unpacking, sorting, re-packing and shipping out to distributors who will in turn unpack, sort and resend out to dealers.
And so on...............
We seem to have focussed so much on when they will get here that we have forgotten the "big picture!" Guys, the long caboose is definitely here!! Okay, Japan got it first. So what? The important thing is Japan has got them!!! They're real! They DO exist and they will blow you away in their exquisite detailing!! I have never had so much fun "anticipating!!" ;D
Anticipation is good
While the sunken boat theory sounds quite plausible, the other more simple explanation is that there is simply not enough of these cabooses for the US market, as Japan probably took the entire production run;-) After all we deserve them here, as the original is also very nicely preserved in Tokyo:
OK, the number on the Bachmann's version is incorrect, but this could be rectified to the original 0409 of RGS which we have here, with some paint or decals... Best wishes from Tokyo, where the cabooses dwell...;-), Zubi
I didn't know that ! "sniff " :'( Why don't you show some pictures of it ?
Mudhen, You cannot really run a picture, can you?? Unless you mount it on a flatcar, perhaps. You know, there is a simple solution. Post order you caboose from Japan!! You will sure have it by September. Otherwise, anticipate..., as Bachmann suggests;-) Best wishes from the land of the rising cabooses, Zubi
My railway could become an abandoned line before my caboose even gets here to be on the tail end." sniff " :'( . I hope I have an enough anticipation to hold out !!!!!!, for customs to do there thing, then get it shipped to Canada before the snow flies.
After thought /Brain Fart;
If the snow flies, then I'll have to purchase an OY Steam snow thrower. God only knows where I'll find on of those. ???
Then it will be summer again before I get it. But I should have my caboose by then. ;D
It's one vicious cycle. ;) Help me !!!!!!!!!!!!!! "Sniff, sniff ".........Anticipation :)
Perhaps Mudhen, you are not missing that much... Tokyo seems to be flooded with these cabooses, but no queues of customers - which I sometimes see when a new release of say KATO is delivered! I went to Tam-Tam today and there it is in full 'glory': (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3560/3791711521_dcff6d7a72_o.jpg)
but is it worth the risk? To be honest, the first impression is not as great as all that anticipating would deserve, Zubi
Do you fine folks ever serve cheese and crackers with all of this "whine"?
Please go build something, play with ;Dthe trains as the saying goes..Model Railroading is FUN!
Good grief!
Now that "The Caboose" is just about here we can start a thread that will go on ad nauseam speculating on the new Forney, its features, and most importantly when it will be delivered.
I can see the "Amen Choir" and "Danny" all over Bachmann Industries in general and certain representatives in reference to the new Forney. ::)
A Forney thread could end up being at least 6-8 pages long. I can hardly wait and anticipate! Not.
I'll just go run what I have and enjoy my trains. ;D

Yea:
Bachmann says they are in and being shipped. Hope my supplier gets mine to me fast. Can hardly control myself !!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
I'm sure the economy has something to do with the absence of "long lines" but honestly, when have we ever seen long lines other than right before Christmas? I'm sure that if you could wait the next four months, you would see these beauties flying off the shelves but for myself, I'll opt for getting them as soon as they show up! If they are here by the last weekend in Sept. (when I am attending Marty Cozad's annual battery/steamup at his place) then I will be content. If it doesn't, then I will hope for it before my Halloween Open House! Patience.
and now, finally, this thread can "officially" R.I.P.! :D

Dear Mr Bucksco,
Many thanks for the photos. I have actually acquired one of these cabooses before seeing these photos. As Tam-Tam shop in Akihabara started discounting these cabooses at the end of August, I took the risk and bought one flying Rio-Grande version. It is quite good. My first impression must have been influenced by the box - I guess I developed some kind of immunity against them. But also the exaggerated wood grain I saw inside, plus the oversized and unpainted grab irons on the wall above the platform did not exactly encourage me. Anyway, the hardware can be painted, and thase particular grab irons may have been larger on one or two prototypes. The wood grain, well, it is a matter of taste I suppose, I would prefer it finer and more gentle, but some may like it the way it is. Also, the wall or table lamps inside, although nice, look somewhat oversize and artificial to me, but perhaps it was not technically possible to make them more realistic size. Finally, nicer wheels with raised lettering and ribs would be welcome on a highly detailed model.
Overall, it is a very good product, and many things are nice and well done such as lettering which has never been done correctly to date on any RTR long cabooses of D&RGW.
Of course, plastic has its limitations and the poor RGS version is incorrect, in particular its length. I am not sure whether I am going to overcome this. But hopefully this will not deter many others. The D&RGW versions look pretty sweet and I feel I may be getting the toilet seat version some day.
I only hope the plastic will survive longer than that on my previous Bachmann purchase, the very first Shay engine from 1998 with which I happily parted a long time ago.
Now that Bachmann proved that they can build a decent car, even with some interior, I would suggest to consider one of these fine examples for the future products:
http://4largescale.com/fletch/d60c.htm
http://4largescale.com/fletch/d60.htm
I believe many modellers who bought your early Moguls and Americans would be happy to buy some of these if you produce them to the same (or better) accuracy as the D&RGW caboose.
Best wishes from Tokyo, Zubi
Evenin', Zubi!! tac here with my long-awaited caboose.......It arrove yesterday just as me and ig were about to embark on a trip over to North Wales to paly trains at my brother-in-law's. I chose the 'Flying Rio Grande' version to match my Accucraft K-27s, and while I'm pretty much happy with it, I couldn't help but notice a couple of omissions/mistakes.
1. The marker lights face green to rear on mine. I'm sure I've seen a fix on another well-known forum but for the life of me I can't find the thread [never have been able to find ANY thread using the so-called search function on THAT forum].
2. The anti-rotation clips on the turnbuckles are conspicuous by their absence - sure, a couple of strips of basswood will fix that, but sheeesh......over here in sunny UK it's $225.00 - cheapest.
I'll be giving it a run tomorrow, if it doesn't rain!
Best wishes to you from

Tac,
The information in reference to the orientation of the marker lights is right here on the Bachmann site.
QuoteAs delivered it appears that the marker light lanterns are not properly installed on most if not all units. The markers have the green lense to the rear. Wrong.
Red should show to the rear and sides. Green should show to the front. Have read, but don't know for sure, that at some point in time the markers were changed to amber lenses to the sides and rear.
On another site there's a posting where a new owner managed to damage the marker light wiring when trying to get the red lenses facing to the rear. It is not necessary to pull the marker light assembly from the body. The lantern will slide off the marker light base.
Here's the lantern removed from its base. All that is necessary to get the proper lense orientation is to move the left lantern to the right side and right lantern to the left. Also refer to page G887X-IS001 of supplied documentation. Takes about a minute or so to make the correction. Wonder why folks won't take the time to review supplied documentation before attempting any work on a model. :
Wonder if Danny has figured this out yet?
Boards installed through the turn buckles was not necessarily common on truss rod cars. Might be a nice touch, but checking old photos will show that most truss rod cars did not use any type board through the turn buckles. Of course you always have the option of adding them.
One of the "Enthusiastic Children"
JD
Terry, the info about marker lights went to you per email. TD&RGW cabooses generally did not have boards in the turnbuckles, I just looked at some photos and saw a couple of exceptions, but #505 did not have them, and it is likely that #503 didn't have them either. Best wishes, Zubi
