Title: Question about the Overland 4-8-4 Loco.
Post by: DaveMFnC on December 12, 2009, 11:14:27 PM
I need to get a definitive answer on this one.

I bought the Overland Limited set a few days ago, Mainly just for the loco.
The diagram included with the set clearly shows the old split-frame design and pickup going to a can motor with those plastic wheel sleeves that always crack. :(  Yet after poking around, I noticed that the loco I have has pickup wipers between the wheels.  ??? "Huh"..I said and looked at the diagrams for the new DCC 4-8-4 Niagara and low and behold...Identical mechanisms...Right down to the wiper placement and chassis differences. My question is (Mr. Bach-man...) When were these locomotives retooled? The running gear is amazing (as opposed to the older model) and It runs like a Swiss watch. The only thing separating this loco from a spectrum is the lack of a flywheel or band drive. Other than that I'm very happy with this engine and It's performance. Just want to know what changes were made and when. Good job on this one! ;D

Dear Dave,
Yes, they have the updated drive. I'll mention the paperwork issue to the proper people.
Thanks!

I got one about a year ago. Much to my surprise the smoke unit still works!
