Title: Speed/pulling power of Spectrum 2-8-0.
Post by: Snotrek on December 19, 2012, 12:17:51 AM
Is the 2-8-0 "geared down".  I just purchased one and it runs MUCH slower using the same amount of power that my Bachmann 4-6-0.  Should I expect this or is there a problem with the 2-8-0?  Both run smoothly.  Am using Digitrax DCC empire builder.  Have not tested either for pulling power.

The 2-8-0 is geared very low. Top speed will be about 60 scale MPH in most cases on a 12V system. That equates to about 2 seconds to travel 12 inches.

Speed does not equal pulling power, infact the 2-8-0's low gearing improves it's pulling performance. I have a couple 2-8-0's that will each pull a 60 car train on level track.
