Title: 1990's Rivarossi 4-8-8-4 (Bigboy) lubrication
Post by: hotrainlover on March 29, 2008, 04:40:13 PM
Does anyone know the pariculars on lubing this engine?  I have started hearing a "whine" as this engine runs.  I lubed it from the underside.  There is 2 small gears visable.  This did not help.  I think it could be the motor bearings, but the instructions that come with the loco no not show the "breakdown".
Thanks for the help!!

I don't own one of these, but other articulates of this style. I believe there is a drive shaft with bearings-which can dry out.... under the shell. I guess it's your call, do you have directions covering boiler shell removal?

There is a screw in the underside of the smokebox, another under the steam dome which will pry off, and a large screw under the firebox.

Be careful if you remove the plastic worm covers on the truck towers, because it's easy to crack them.
