Follow up question, i noticed circular cutouts in the axle wells that seem to match the spring-mounted axles supports i remember seeing in my russian 2-10-0 when i fixed it last. Is this model supposed to have those? as you can see in the picture, they are not present, and the parts diagram doesnt explode the lower assembly. basically, did this run ommit them or are they missing. i'm baically trying to find out if this model has been opened before because depsite looking like new, i cant figure out how the axle would have gotten twisted.

it runs fine so if hte part IS supposed to be there, its still running fine, just curious

have you checked the quartering of the wheels?
The rod connections should be 90 deg rotated to the opposite wheels.
If that is off you get binding.

Ton

That was exactly it, the front axle was slightly out of quarter. it never even occured to me that that could happen to a model. I lightly twisted it until i felt it was in the right spot and voila, now it runs fine. not bad for 65 bucks.

So I recently got a decent deal on a supposed new Sound value 2-8-0. Only catch? Untested.

Well it arrived and wouldnt ya know, it doesnt run. The motion binds on the wheels. I've determined that it is infact the Motion, the motor and worm spin fine.

I CAN return it, but i'd kinda like to fix it as i'm fond of the 2-8-0's and the two i have just arent enough! Only problem is, i cannot for the life of me figure out WHY its binding. The rods dont seem to be impacting and the axle slots are clear. to my untrained eyes, it should work. but it dont.

SO, i have pictures of the rods in the worst spot (it catches roughly every quarter turn, but this is the spot that it cant be forced past while rotating "fowards", it CAN be forced though with effort if rotating backwards). I also have a short video displaying the binding. I'm HOPING somebody can make a suggestion as to what might be causing it, if they see something wrong that I missed.

Thanks for the help you can provide,Sincerely - Bricks

Just a point regarding body shell swaps - Bachmann have changed their electrical connections between loco and tender. The older Bachmann stuff had a 4-pin connector and a 2-pin, total 6 pins. The new stuff mostly has a single 8-pin connector. So you can't just plug an old tender into a new loco chassis - I fould this when looking at tender swaps between the old and new 4-6-0s. You may have to swap your Clinchfield tender body onto your new 2-8-0 tender chassis, but tender bodies don't always fit newer chassis either, or you may need to take the circuit boards and 8-pin connector from your new loco and put it into your Clinchfield tender, again if it will fit!

Good luck,
Bill.

Just out of curiosity, this true across their lineup? if so, thats fantastic news, i've never liked the 4+2 plus, in fact i have a 2-10-0 out for repair right now that had the plugs fail and i couldnt fix it myself, though i did make an attempt. sadly, since the russian hasnt been made in years, despite it being one of my favorites, i have no idea what i'll get back since i'd be SHOCKED if they fix it. Might track down another russian at some point but the aftermarket on those is rough since they were notoriously finicky engines with lots of issues. i'd repaired this one three times for differnet issues as is

Returning from the land of the lurkers just to say farewell to that fine layout. I remember watching this layout go up and thinking how great it looked. one day, i can only hope to have the room for such a setup instead of the 4*8 in my bedroom corner that has been mine for the last four years, give or take. I look forwards to what you do next!

I had one of these with this exact issue out of the box. the issue turned out to be a slightly too long copper pickup plate (remove the long strip of plastic on the bottom of the engine, its attacked to that), causing it to bow upwards and short against the frame. I just isolated it and it fixed the issue

I had the same Issue with my decapod, and I found that one of the rods in the valve gear was bowed inward, causing it to "clip" into the side rod in reverse (going fowards the rod tended to be held slightly farther out and thus it didn't happen). You might want to check that no rods are hitting each other.

Its possible that section of track is dirty. sound locomotives are much more sensitive to power loss (I actually removed the sound decoder from my only sound loco because it stalled too often, runs like a dream with a non-sound decoder in)

I'd be shocked to see it come back, but given that It is my absolute favorite model and that its hard to find one under 200, I'd support a rerelease in a heartbeat. Just not with sound. Sound locos don't run well on my track, cost a lot more, and quite frankly, if the chuff isn't synced, it looks weird.

Edit: Also, just now saw the other comment, chalk it up to me being tired. Yeah, I'm on break from school at the moment. Working on next semesters schedule currently.

I take exception to that remark however, LOL  :D

I'm with Jon on this one, to quote a very old movie that I can't seem to remember the name of at the moment, "You can't beat Steam"

Well, it  looks like Fotki does not stay free, so I've lost that account.  I'm stuck with photobucket again. Crap.

Look into Imgur, I love using it.

In layout news, that looks great, I love how you've made the town look

What else is out there that will work here like Photobucket does?

I'm an imgur user myself.

I pity the man who has to retrieve the log-laden car on the end of the inner yard track. Hell of a switching job!

Seriously though, looks great jonathan. I wish I had the time, money, or space for a nice large layout. Keep us informed!
