Title: Disassembly
Post by: donpedro on August 11, 2010, 01:10:03 AM
I want to turn my Spectrum Mogul and GE 45 ton engines to DCC, using ESU LokSound decoders and appropriate speakers. I´m looking for useful disassembly hints.

Greetings from Germany
Peter

I can't speak to the 45-tonner, but the Mogul comes apart fairly simply. There are four screws in the firebox, two on each side, right below the running board. A 5th screw is between the cylinders going up through the steam chest. To get to that screw, you must remove the front pilot truck, then remove the plate that goes between the two cylinders (two really small screws just inside the cylinders). You'll also want to remove the two boiler stays on the front of the loco. That will separate the boiler from the chassis, and you can get to the motor leads, etc. from that point.

You'll also want to pull off the front smokebox to get to the main PC board that controls lights, track power input, etc.

Later,

K

Hello Kevin, your post helps al lot. I guess the 45 tonner is easier to deal with.
Your name sounds familiar to me, since I am a subscriber to "Garden Railways".
Thanks again
