N / n-scale locomotive roster
March 10, 2012, 10:13:16 PM
over the process of several months of using a spectrum 2-10-2 and 2-8-0 i have noticed several issues. number 1, the valve gear tends to loosen over time. number 2, the motor got LOUDER over time (slightly). but after lots of run time and several tweaks here aqnd there they run great. i strongly recommend these locomotives for anyone looking for a cheap yet efficient steam loco fleet.

N / tips for running your 2-10-2
February 18, 2012, 08:53:23 PM
hi i found some tricks for running the 2-10-2 in n-scale. if you hear squeeking DO NOT oil the side rods try oiling the truck axles first if it still squeeks oil the mounts for the trucks if it continues then oil the side rods and every little piece not just one or two. after oiling run full throttle for at least 30-60 minutes BEFORE putting it away or it will get in the engine and you will be in a world of hurt. run through the throttle range forward AND reverse for quite some time then the locomotive will run smoothly and quitely afterword with an excellent slow speed that is perfect for slow freight drags.also add bullfrog snot for traction and add a spring to the front truck.

N / fixing front trucks in spectrum steamers
February 18, 2012, 06:12:55 PM
tired of your front trucks derailing? today during weekly sessions at my model train club i noticed the front truck kept jumping the rails. to solve this problem i put a small spring in the front under the truck. it will only require a small piece but will hold the truck to the rails with a good strong grip. hope this helps others with similar problems.

N / applying decals to 2-10-2
February 18, 2012, 11:47:46 AM
hi i applied microscale decals to the 2-10-2 but had troubles keeping them on the engine. i found that nail polish will seal them on but you can only use a small amount or the decals will desolve. i might post pics if i can figure out how.
