Oliver the Great Western Engine
(http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20071104222341/ttte/images/e/e6/Oliver.jpg)
Summary:
He is a well known and well liked from fans young and old. He is #11 and one of the originals from Thomas and Friends.
Oliver was introduced in the episode Escape but was made famous in Toad Stands By. (The episode where he destroyed S.C. Ruffey) He was saved from scrap by Douglas and was making waves ever since in the world of T&F. Known as "The Little Western" he has become close to or just as popular as the other Great Western Duck.
Reasons for Production:
Oliver was saved by Douglas (as mentioned before) but since Donald AND Douglas are being made people will want to buy this trio.
They would also increase the number of SC Ruffey's sold too because they will want that combo.
Oliver is only a 0-4-2 and will be easier to model rather than another tender engine like Hank.
Since he is so well liked many people will buy him to add to the collection.
Since we have skipped #8 to go on to 9 and 10 I say why not try for 8 and make 11 as well.
Episodes:
He has been featured in multiple episodes such as Gordon take a shortcut but starred in more of his own.
He has been in Oliver's Find, Toad Stands By, Escape, Busy Going Backwards and many more timeless tales

These are only the important reasons why Oliver should be made.
Tell me what you think of my best review so far. (that is only my opinion)
I would like to also thank Chaz and Sparks for the help.
I agree with this! Oliver would be great.
Great post. All Bachmann can do now though, is suggest to HiT to make a HO Scale model of him... It's all up to them after all, or I'm sure Bachmann would've been giving us all the engines 1 by 1 all this time. I wish this luck!
I really tried and yes Oliver should be made.
IF it were up to Bachmann alone then of course they would...but they work in conjunction with HiT.
so do i oliver and duck should be made
They should be made! If only we had a petition or something.

A year and a few months ago someone did make a petition when they were trying to get the Scots. Someone on youtube linked it all over his channel and I signed off on it. You can make a petition, on a blog or something. I'm not sure how he did it, but it may have helped the Scots be created.

oh wow well as much as I want to I think someone a little older than I make the petition because (without giving away my age) I don't want to get to involved.

Fair enough... am I right to assume the "96" in your user-name means more than just a random number? lol :P
Maybe lol. Yeah its my lucky # and my cousin's football #. Well maybe I'm close to JD417 in the age department.
Don't mind my double post but which color do you like better? The original or the snow picture's color. I like the 2nd picture better but if made it should be original at least his face was always the same not like the narrow gauge. (Sir Handel and Peter Sam)

the color in the 2nd picture is too bright, the color in the 1st picture is the exact color of Oliver.
Yeah that would be the best color.
Yes indeed. I think the third picture has the perfect face for Oliver.
In actuallity I wouldn't be surprised if Diesel, Duck, Oliver, Toad, and the Red Branchline coaches came out this year and next year. (2011 to 2012)

Wow, I didn't know Oliver was that well liked! :) Maybe he has a better chance for release this year than I thought...
In my opinion, Bachmann might make a larger profit by releasing Duck and Oliver simultaneously instead of separate, since people may feel compelled to buy both Great Western engines instead of just one. (I know I'd feel that way! ;D)

With the release of Donald and Douglas coming up I doubt they will all come out this year. I think Diesel or Oliver (if Oliver Toad would also) won't happen.

Hopefully Diesel. I'd much rather have Oliver be released first and have Diesel next year, but of course that's just me. Plus Duck, the Scottish Twins and Oliver would go extremely well together release-wise!
BillingsRR that person with the bachmann donald and douglas petitsion was me im actually thinking of making more for bachmanns 2011 range i can gladly make one for oliver for JJ96 and the surporters even i hope oliver or duck or even both will make it this year
A petition for Oliver sound like a great idea, donaldthescotishtwin! Why not include Duck though, it seems only right that both great western engines go together. Cheers to a Duck and Oliver petition!
Yes a petition for the Great Westerns...but I fear we may be too late. :'(
Go for it! I'd sign a "Great Western" petition in a heartbeat!
me too!!!!
u guys dont know how much i want a bachmann duck!!
when i first started moddeling i was looking for a bachmann Duck because i wanted to say Duck was my first engine, but then i figured out they didnt make him :'( and ever since ive been praying for bachmann Duck!!!
GO GWR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Here! Here!
no were not late i sent the bachmann D&D petition on jan 14 last year

That's way too late really. Bachmann I'm certain decide their years releases well in advance, so they can check costings, toolings and begin pre-production sample manufacturing. A duck and Oliver petition for now would most likely have an effect on next or the year after's releases.
well the petition worked last year it might again this year
Luck more than anything, but it may have helped them decide to announce the twins there and then...
the petition is now ready heres the post: http://www.bachmanntrains.com/home-usa/board/index.php/topic,15707.msg125177.html#msg125177
No, it didn't. The way I (and many others) see it, your petition was a pure coincidence. ::) Plus, this petition this year will make no use: they've probably known what they're releasing this year since about August 2010! :P You don't think they'll change their mind because of one person's YouTube video, do you? One of their models, at least, is probably in production now. Remember how we saw Bill and Ben straight away, pretty much?
*Sigh*
If Duck and Oliver are made, it's coincidence. Your video has no influence this year, dude...
i dont care what you think end of also the petition is for JJ96 now go
Go where?
Which was little more than a month before the announcements. The petition which had less that 20 Signatures did nothing to get them announced, BACHMANN knows what is being announced way before announcements why do you think we had pictures of Bill and Ben mere weeks after the announcements last year. Seriously you guys need a reality check, they will make whats in demand and what HiT tells them to, what may be smart is making a petition for the 2012 range NOW not a month before those announcements too and not a petition the range that is gonna be announced in 5 weeks. :P
Guys i'm sorry to sound rude but get it through your heads, they choose we don't we can tell them what we want by posting it in forums and such, but a petition this close wont do anything.
As mush as I hate to agree he is probably right.
the main thing is last year we got donald and douglas the petition is just a last attempt as i said i honestly dont care about this years range last year i did and we did get what everyone hoped also less than 20 sigs? it had over 40
Thanks for the petition though.
oliver an duck are engins that i grew up with in the 90's when thomas was a good show an im 22 now an it kills me to see what thomas has become if i had a child i wouldnt let him watch it. so we need oliver an duck not hank or harvy that wernt even made up by the Rev. W. Awdry. who brought thomas to life his characters should come frist.
Agreed. I don't have kids yet (keyword yet and the 96 means something) but when I babysit my three year old cousins I brought a different VHS every time, then one day he saw it on TV and wanted to see more like that. I was crushed, his first CGI was Gordon Takes a Shortcut so he likes Duck and Oliver. I also read him stories from this book...

Oliver!
Oliver with scruffy set pack hmmmm ::)
Oliver, S.C. Ruffey, and Toad. That would be a set. See now that would be smart if they made them ONLY in sets because who ever would want the engine would need to buy the whole set.

Yeah, but I already have a track layout. I wouldn't pay $100+ for just one engine and have all this extra track I would never use.

(Geez, I think I'm getting

I'm currently at The Four Little Engines. (its the narrow gauge part)
i've read the whole book.
I'm rereading it...I actually just finished that, now I'm on Percy the Small Engine.
I believe I've only read the whole thing in order once. Usually I just skip around to different books.
You know, I bet there are very few teens who still read Thomas the Tank Engine :P.

No one was saying it's an issue, they were just saying that it is highly unlikely many teenagers read the books still.
~G
I'm a teen and I read it too. In fact for a school project I had to read a childrens' story to the class so I read Edward's Exploit.
Im glad to c that u agreed with me, I still read the book to but I wish they would have made all the storys into tv shows with all the visiting engins, an when they was done with them started with his sons books, but if i had to engins to have made they would be boco an oliver an vans with faces an face packs with like 5 differnt faces so we could make all our trucks look like they should!
When I said few teens still read it I was just trying to be a little humorous. Sorry if I offended anyone. :-[

I'd like either the face in the pics JJ96 posted or the one where he has that grin with his teeth showing. (I'd post a picture instead of describing the face, but I'm not sure how.) :-\

To insert a picture, as you type you message, go to addition options at the bottom left-hand corner of where you type. Go to where it says "Attach:". Next, click "Browse" and choose the pic you want. Hopefully it's small enough to post, for when I try to post pics, it says that the pics are too big. Or, when you type, unde all the option buttons (like bold, underline, etc.), there is a button with a picture. When you click it, it will say (http://). In between the last bracket of the first (//and%20the%20first%20bracket%20of), place the URL of a picture and that is another way to post pictures.

I think Duck should be first, thus engines #1-10 would be released.
I agree. Finish off the numbers!!! :P
thats one of my reasons too
That's one of the main reasons why Duck has somewhat of an advantage when compared to Oliver. Children will have engines 1-7 and 9 and 10, but they will ask questions about when they will get the sodor engine #8 to get through the basic 1-10. Can't see much discussion for Oliver in that term since 11 may stand out for some kids.

Interesting idea. I like it. I still think that the coal load should be sold separately so people can fill their own Troublesome Trucks #1 and #2 without having to buy a lot of the coal wagons.
Now I think it would be smart for Bachmann to sell Duck and Oliver in sets ONLY. That would bring more money if somebody really wants Duck and Oliver.

EDIT:what do you think of my set idea? ;D
I know I wouldnt buy a whole set just to get a engine. I dont need extra tracks, transformers, etc. But if it was just the engine and some trucks or coaches then I would buy it.
I might I'm not sure. But this is a good or profitable idea.
I wouldn't get a set to get them I'd just put up with there hornby versions I have
there is NO WAY i'm getting a hornby duck, but if bachmann don't make Oliver and toad, i will buy the hornby version, but i KNOW i'm getting the hornby stepney and old slow coach because of how good they look.

The Hornby Duck is a bad model; it uses a tooling that dates to the 1970s.

Now I think it would be smart for Bachmann to sell Duck and Oliver in sets ONLY. That would bring more money if somebody really wants Duck and Oliver.
That is smart. People would pay extra for track that way
I would love this and for those sets. Oliver Set: Oliver, Toad, and S.C. Ruffey.
Duck Set: Duck and 2 red branchline coaches (1 Regular and 1 Brake)
what about my set idea do I not exist to you people or something?! >:(
Your set is good, but they haven't made a tanker with a face yet, maybe a possible candidate for truck 4 or 5............
But yet again they don't make Oliver or Toad ethier. But since they made a van, well cattle car, with a face I guess the troublesome tanker, as I named it, would be good as truck 4/5.

that was a spin off idea too but I forgot about it and I was sayin if there was a set that was my idea for it + look at the episode there is a troublesome tanker so yeah + it could be exclusive to the set

We had a discussion about this awhile ago. Hornby doesn't really care much for our minority of opinions, and they still get a majority control of the UK market, so I'd say it's fair game. Besides, different opinions and choosing one company over another based on which product is better encourages a Free Market and competition. I hope it ends up encouraging Hornby to improve their older products (which their products like Stepney and Oliver are stunning in quality for Thomas models, in a good way!). ;)
Their Pecry isn't the worst either.

They're just too much like the original RW series ones, rather than the TV show. Though some of the faces are excellently crafted.

Which is the goal of their models. It brings them some individuality, like what ERTL did.
If you ask me the worst hornby models are ( I dont havea any so correct me if Im wrong) Henry, Gordon, Thomas, James, Edward, and Emily.

James gordon and henry are good models but I agree with the rest I only have james but I have a flying scotsman bassically gordon is there flying scotsman with james's tender (just minus the loco drive)and with new paint (of course)
I always had a liking to Hornby Edward, and as Sparks said, Hornby Stepney and Oliver are stunning models! Detail is excellent on them!
I also like hornby Thomas, (as you know) he is closer to the RWS
Well I'm still I die-heart Bachmann customer. :P

I just saw "Gordon Takes a Shortcut" for the first time today. Seems like the only way we can see Duck or Oliver in the show is if some other engine gets lost on an unknown railway! :P

Although I'm not a big fan of Season 8 onwards, that episode was pretty good.

I never had a problem with anything up to season 10, ugh. LOL :P
I say up to season 5 were orignals, up to season 8 were Ok, and only that episode is ok past season 8.
Season 8 feels like an extended Season 7 in some aspects.
From Season 8 on almost all of the episodes had the same storyline-
Someone takes something/does something wrong/does not listen.
They crash and are rescued.
They learn never to make the same mistake again.

That's the plot for the majority of episodes, especially those like Dirty Objects (James doesn't pay attention, crashes, and realizes he was bad to Toby) and Percy Takes the Plunge (Percy ignores a danger sign, crashes into the sea, and learns to obey signs). The problem is the writing in newer episodes adds less uniqueness to each episode. Otherwise, plots have changed little.
Yes it is true there are a lot of old episodes like that, but now every single episode follows those guidelines. There is no difference except the fact it is a new engine each time.
Same with Down a Mine too.

I'd say the
true originals would be seasons 1-4, since those are the seasons based on the Railway Series (for the most part). After that, Thomas and Friends seemed to get worse little by little, season after season, until it has reached its current state of "ugh".
Season 5 followed the RWS guidelines. They were more accurate than what is out now. Season 6 is when the accuracy disapeered along with Allcroft. Sure the episodes where not from the books, but they had similar story lines and used the same characters.
I guess your right, now that I think about it. But my personal favorite seasons are 1-4.

I'd say seasons 8-11 feels like a continuation of seasons 1-3.(Which were the best)
Of all seasons of the New Series, Season 8 is my favorite because I feels like it has more ties to the Classic Series (mostly using stock footage) and in one commercial I saw for a video/DVD of "Thomas' Sodor Celebration", they played the classic Thomas theme :)
Nothing was the same after season 2. My favourite 2 seasons will always be those. I liked how accidents were taken more seriously in the first 2 seasons... it actually made me feel a lot of emotion towards the engines. Not so much any more...
Guess they didn't want kids crying or feeling depressed any more... so accidents were turned into a joke.

After Season 2, the show had a new producer as Robert Cardona had left to do his own work (including TUGS). This is probably a likely explanation as to why the atmosphere changed.
I heard about that. Some may say that the change in producer doesn't matter, but the producer has almost an equal amount of say in what goes on as the director.

I was more implying that it was probably Cardona who influenced the darker atmosphere into the series.
Well what I said goes both ways. If one producer liked it more dark and then he leaves and the new producer likes it more silly that is how it will stay. The producers actually do more for a show than the average person thinks.

I thought that it was common knowledge that the producers have a large portion of control. :P
Well, depends on who you ask. Most of the people I know believe the director does all the work and the producers just get paid for doing nothing.
my personal fav seasons 1 2 and 5
Back to the subject of Oliver, he has appeared in Seasons 3, 4, 5, 6 (through cameos), 7, and 12.
You'd think after a 5 season break, Gordon's conversation with Oliver in "Shortcut" would've been more like this:
Gordon: Dude, where have you been for the past five years?!
Oliver: Oh, Toad and I have just been chilling out on this siding.
Gordon: :o!!!
LOL

That reminds me- there's been all this talk about Oliver but none about Toad. I mean surely if you want the engine the brakevan will be sure to follow right?
Yeah, I think the wanting of Toad's release is supposed to be implied with the wanting of Oliver's.

I agree. Like Thomas and Toby with their respective coaches, you can't imagine one without the other.

Plus, it would be nice to have another brakevan.
I agree DinoNTrains.
seeing how old slow coach is GW, anyone think she would have a chance somwere down the line? (no pun intended :P)
I doubt it. She was in like 2 episodes right?
Yeah, that's right. But she's Great Western, eh? I didn't know that.
Neither did I. :P
Personally, I doubt that Old Slow Coach will ever be made because of what JJ96 just said (about her appearing in just 2 episodes) and that I think her Hornby model is fine enough, although I don't have it (I've seen pics of it).
No offense to anyone.
I think Gullane had some intentions to use Old Slow Coach in Season 6:
Her model was touched up post-MRR. Shame this went unrealized though. BoCo and The Diesel had the same fate.
yes she is GW, Old Slow Coach is based upon a Falmouth Coupe TRI Composite coach, built in 1893 for the Great Western Railway.
I did not know that. :o
Even I didn't know she was Great Western. Oh, well. If Oliver and Duck (and perhaps Toad) were ever released, what if there was a gift pack with a GWR theme?
well seeing how oliver or duck were never seen with OSC i dont think that would ever happen
That's true. but at any rate, I hope that at least one of the GWR engines is released this year.
I'm guessing Duck, Diesel, and the twins are all coming out this year.
i could see that or
The twins, Diesel and Rosie
That is more likely but I think everyone wants to see a GWR engine.
im praying for myself to be released
read my my signature ;)
Well my signature says it all. LOL! :P
But still Duck more than Rosie.

GWR all the way!
Here here! We need GWR engines for HO
Yes...GWR, GWR, GWR!
I agree.
I hope Oliver is released, but if he isn't I bet we all won't be surprised. I feel the next 4 choices, if any, are gunna be Oliver, Duck, Diesel, and Rosie. (Not in that order) So I say for a final arguement what are your predictions?
I predict all of what you said except for Rosie, although I don't think she'd be too bad... idk
I received an email back from Hornby, and they're not going to be producing any Oliver this year... so maybe this is Bachmann's chance?
Maybe, maybe not. We'll found out who and what will be released this Saturday.
I guess I'll change the name of this thread from Oliver for 2011 to Oliver for 2012. :(
Dont be too hasty there is still time for something.
When will the Toy Fair be over?
if bachmann do oliver, duck and toad then i will be getting them and selling on my oliver and toad. i pre ordered my donald nd douglas today ;D and ordered bill and ben, they should be arriving very soon!
Well, they confirmed some, but a few more may come.
I'm not gunna be made either Duck. Don't worry we will work the branchline till next year. (I think I got into character there.) :P
