Title: Making Background Foliage

I have a "what I did" about making background trees with lichen and Woodland Scenics Foliage at:

My club has used the cotton ball tree method with great success.  The trick is to use black spray paint as a first coat on the cotton balls.

But the cotton ball technique just looks like cotton balls with foam on them. They lack any 3d features. Been there done that. It is like the lichen, lichen is still lichen. Even if you put ground foam on the lichen it still only looks like lichen balls with ground foam on it.

Was at a layout with the cotton ball forest and my wife asked "what are those cottom balls supposed to be".
