Title: 2-6-0 Disassembly
Post by: ccim2535 on April 19, 2009, 12:28:50 PM
I'm scared to attack the 2-6-0 too vigorously and break something. Can you tell me how the front of the smoke box is attached to the cylinders saddle? Is it just a press fit that needs to be pryed upward or is there something else?

Solution found.
1. Remove the handrails from smoke box to pilot
2. Remove the oil lines from boiler to steam chests.
3. Using a flat screwdriver blade slightly larger than the vertical space between the smoke box & pilot, place it flat beneath the smoke box & pilot deck and roll it forward so it both lifts & pulls the smoke box upward & forward. This should release the boiler front from the frame.
4. Slide the boiler slightly rearward to disengage the tab beneath the fire box rear. The boiler should now be free, except......
5. Raising the boiler some 1/2" may result in binding. This is caused by the motor brushes being a smidge too wide for the boiler opening. Wiggle & pull it. Even use a large screwdriver "GENTLY" to twist the boiler upward on each side until it is totally free.

      Bob,

Regarding the 'bind'.   Place loco on bench facing towards you then with a hand on each side insert fingernail between bottom of boiler and chassis. gently pull open and lift.
Before replacing, hold boiler above chassis and note relative position of motor brushes. Remove about 1/16" to 1/8" about 1" long from each side of boiler opening around noted position. Makes things easier if you want to remove boiler again later.
