Title: 16 wheel tender
Post by: NBDAVE on November 13, 2013, 05:57:27 PM
I'm new on this forum and new at trains so I could use a little help. I have a Bachmann 16-wheel tender like what I have seen used with the AT&SF 2-10-4. I'm assuming it is a 52 foot 16 wheel tender but it has the CN logo on the side and in white the number 6218 on the back. It also says in white 12000 G ( I assume 12,000 gallons) and it also has 21T. I have been unable to locate any photos of a CN loco with this type of tender and I have tried to locate information using these numbers but no luck. If you know the correct Bachmann engine for this tender or anything thing else that will explain what I have I certainly would appreciate it.
The majority of CN locos used Vandy tenders, at least from what I found.
Thanks.

I do not know if they still make it, however i found that bachmann USED to make a model of the CN 4-8-4 6218. It is likely this is what it is from. The most recent version i found had horn hook couplers and looked to be pre bachmann plus if I am not mistaken.

edit: It should be noted that all photos of the real CN 6218 i found had it using a vanderbilt tender with two 6 wheeled trucks so it probably was the stock tender (or even stock 4-8-4) with the CN logo on it.

I've had the same problem with photos. I'll keep searching for photos of the Bachmann CN 6218 and hopefully I'll stumble across one. I would agree  that it probably is from an early Bachmann release but you would think on the WWW there would be some information or photos.

A quick Google search brought up an older ebay listing. It was DC only and had horn hook couplers. I just downloaded the photo rather than the ebay link. Sane loco number.

Looks like we all found it at the same time, what are the odds! Anyway, that looks closer to a stock model that the actual one.

Thanks for your help. Now I have a 4-10-2 with the AT&SF removed and a CN 16 wheel tender. Now I have to get another CN 4-8-4 for the tender and a Vandy tender and decals for Central Vermont. I'm trying to stick with CN and/or affiliate lines and CV is the only CN affiliate that used a 2-10-4

That is one of the photos that has been giving me trouble. I see the model with one tender and the actual with another. Now I don't know what to do with the tender.

If you look at the other models of the 2618 such as:
http://www.brasstrains.com/images/products/049403/DSC09819-20130822164959-showcase.jpg

and
http://www.brasstrains.com/images/products/040919/DSC07024-showcase.jpg

you'd see they too have vandy tenders. As i said, I believe Bachman put a stock tender on the thing to save some money. Early Bachmann was not exactly know for being all that accurate.

I saw all this brass before with the Vandy and that just complicated things as well. Now to figure out which roads used this type of tender and see if I can get decals from Microscale to match.

The largest CNR Locomotives I could find were the 2-10-2 T-4's unfortunately, and they all had 12 wheeled tenders.

Canadian pacific had the T1 selkirks, 2-10-4's But once again they used 12 wheeled.

Thanks but I have been looking for days and have come to the same conclusion. Now to find what railroads did use the 16 wheeler. I know the Santa Fe did.

PRR had some, as did the Atlantic Coast Line. Not sure but i think UP had a few as well.

I have tried that and 16-wheel tenders, just about any combination I could think of. I think what I will end up doing is removing the CN logo from the tender and and go with A.T.&SF for both because there are photos of this combo. Thanks for all the help.

AT&SF is the only RR that I could find that used the 16 wheel tender. Most others are 12 or 14.

PRR had the 16 wheel also. Believe it was called a "Coast to Coast"
One example below.

The experimental PRR S1 had a 16 wheel tender.

This is what the tender looks like, not very common in my opinion.

I have the 2-10-4 and the tender but the tender has Canadian National logo. To me the easiest thing is remove the CN logo and I ordered some AT&SF decals so I will make it an AT&SF unit. Would like for it to have a been a CN unit but in reality CN never had a 2-10-4, Central Vermont did but they used a Vandy tender.

I think the biggest issue you are running into is that Locomotives in the North east were smaller that those on the west coast and, to a slightly smaller extent, the south. Because they tended to follow the general routes of earlier line, a lot of the area was limited in what it could take. That is why the NYC's largest Steamers (the Niagara's) which still required modifying some of the trackage (turntables especially) were smaller than the UP FEF, SP GS-4/5/6, NW J class, ect. Some of these railroads did make the changes to accommodate larger equipment, some deemed in not cost-effective, especially once diesels started showing up.

I'm going to make the 2 units AT&SF but first I have to remove the Canadian National logo from the 16 wheel tender, what is the best stuff to use to remove it without damaging anything else? Nail polish remover with acetone?

NBD-

I don't know enough about the paint and materials used in your tender's construction but I caution you against using nail polish remover or acetone to remove the CN lettering unless you either have tested to see the effect of those substances on the paint and structure of your model or you know for a fact that acetone won't adversely affect it.

I'd start with less powerful stuff, like goo gone or even water. I light scrub with one of those fiberglass weathering brushes to cut any surface coating on the decals and some water might just take those decals off while leaving the underlying paint intact.

Whatever you decide to do, good luck. And tell us what worked.

I'll try the least harshest material first (water and work my way to the acetone). I've had great luck with acetone on pre-painted die-cast aircraft but I haven't tried plastic before. With the die-cast is is a matter of using just a slightly moist Q-Tip, place some acetone on the decal for about 5 seconds and gently rub the decals with a clean dry Q-tip. As soon as the decal wipes off take a really wet piece of paper towel or clean rag and saturate the acetone area to stop it from working any further. Gently wipe the area dry with a clean cloth or paper towel. It only takes 10 seconds or so to remove the decals, wet the area and dry it. I'll let you know how I make out. This tender is quite old so perhaps it won't take much to remove the logo. The old logos, I assume aren't as hard to remove as the new decal material of today.

Acetone melts most plastics. At best, you end up with a seriously flawed surface which is just about impossible to repair. Are you certain you have decals? Lots of older models had painted lettering and graphics.

Much safer to use wash away a product by scale coat or microsofts micro sol. These used sparingly should be safe and not harm the plastic and hopefully the paint underneath.
