Title: Sound decoders for the On30 2-8-0
Post by: NevinW on August 10, 2015, 07:28:47 PM
I've got a couple of Bachmann On30 2-8-0's that I'de like to put sound decoders and speakers into them.  Any recommendations concerning which deocers work best with this engine.  What size speaker fits?  Thanks.

Cannot tell you what Best is. It will depend on what you experience.  There are varying opinions.
I can only recommend SoundTraxx. Go to the SoundTraxx site. They have a decoder selector for Bachmann locos.
SoundTraxx also is selling the Econami decoder. Take your time looking over the different specs. Don't jump.

I have been following an active SoundTraxx DCC Group discussing the new line of decoders,
The present Tsunami decoder design is at least ten years old.

Something to be aware of. The new decoder can easily be connected to the SoundTraxx Current Keeper. Helps with dirty track but you should still work on keeping the track clean.
There is a steam version good for one amp. which will work with the On30.

No "best". It's what suits you. Basic - easiest - is a Tsunami and speaker to fit the existing speaker enclosure in the tender. My preference would be a TCS WOW steam V3 with a Jaycar AS-3030 speaker. More work but if you can do it, go for it.

If you want to do the work:

Sounds like this:

Always remember in speakers, bigger is better.

Like Steve, take a look (listen) to the TCS WOW decoder.   A real big difference.
