Thomas & Friends / Re: HO/OO Casey Jr. Project

I found this
http://australianmotorsportforums.blogspot.com/2007/12/dumbo-casey-jr-model-sheet.html
Has a nice picture of the original concept sketches

Accucraft made a G scale model of the Casey Jr ride engine at Dizzyworld a couple of years ago, you might be able to find a picture on line of it.

Heres a youtube video of the Accucraft on someones layout;

Good luck

I sure hope that if a new dismal is in the works, that its an SP Little Giant, and not a SP U-50  ::)

..then again a WP&Y class 90 would be nice too...

Interesting, I wonder about this one.

Now interestingly, their IS a 1/29 scale U-50 out there, it was built by a fellow named John Wagner who's a member on Mylargescale.com, and he brought the beasty with him to last years Big Train Show (I know cause I was there too) and their are pics of the beasty on the Del Oro Pacific layout, but this was a complete scratchbuild using Aristocraft FA1 blocks for the drive. I wonder if this model isnt part source of the rumor floating around?

These pics can be seen on the BTS website, under last years show pics.

Personally I would think Bachmann venturing into the 1/29 market, while not a bad idea, would be rather risky with such a rare unit, only 2 RRs used similar engines, SP and UP,  I doubt anyone would buy one in CSX paint but what do I know? Whoda think MTH would stick their necks out with the Triplex? So who knows, maybe theres some merit to a 1/29  scale U-50, I can tell you it was a tremendous hit at the show, but personally I prefered Johns other model he brought, namely an FP-45 currently under construction. Now that to me would have a FAR GREATER market appeal as their were several lines that ran them and the model looked really good.
I'll never buy either though, wrong scale, and way too big for my tiny layout.

OTOH if Mr B is developing a SP "Little Giant" all I can say is WOW, that would be cool! Save me from buying a USA S4 and kitbashing it into a narrow gauge dismal.

While I think the Cooke engine would be great I cannot deny that an affordable 1/22.5~1/20.3 C-16 would also have great appeal.

Lets face facts, even if reissued, at 1/24 the Aristo C-16 still will always look like a small plantation engine next to even an Annie!

Now Mr. Bachmann, whats all this conjecture about a SP "Little Giant" I've been reading about? :o

Nevermind, I found the OP ;)

Did you oil it before or after it returned from Bachmann? If you oiled it before and its skweeking now, it might be a different engine, oil it agian if thats the case, if you oiled it after it was returned then follow the above advise. I would do the above anyways just to be sure.

Large / Re: Frames?
March 27, 2008, 01:58:36 PM
Inside frame is a typical locomotive setup, where the mani frame of the engine is "inside" the drive wheels.

an Outside frame locomotive , the frame is outside the drivers, the drivers are nestled in betwen the main frames, the axles stick farther out for the counterweights and drive rods.

Good examples:

Inside: Bachmann Annie 4-6-0, 0-4-0 Porter

Outside: Bachmann Connie 2-8-0, K-28 2-8-2

The move to outside frames happened only in narrow guage as locomotives needed to be more powerfull they naturally got larger, their boilers and their fireboxes got larger and  larger and the frames supporting those boilers needed to be wider to accomodate them, the first outside frames were poplularized on the 2' gauge Maine RRs, they could place a larger boiler on the engine by shifting the frame to the outside of the drivers, a big deal when your only looking at 24" between your drivers, later D&RGW became a major user with the K27 K36 and K37  being the most well known.

I just hope whatever is next will work on my indoor layout, thats why I would hope for something smaller next time out. The K is a real beauty but its completely beyond my current means both layout and cost wise. :(

Large / OK Bach'man, whats next???
March 20, 2008, 07:33:44 PM
OK, now that the Elephant engine (cant get much bigger than a K-27 ;) ) has been delivered, is B'mann going to next do more of a Dove in comparison?

Seams to me thats a pattern, we had the Railtruck, then the 3 truck Shay, then the revamped Porter, now the K, so that indicates to me something a tad smaller should be next on the Storks delivery schedule.

So can you give us any kind of hint as to what this years big announcement will be, or when it will be announced, even just the words, Big or Little, will suffice  ;D

I'm really hoping for something like a small Forney or a Mason Bogie or something friendly to the R1's on my tight little mining layout. Please dont forget about us, theres still a few of us out here. :o

What I would really drool over would be a 0-4-4 Porter like those used on the Arizona Copper Company RR. :o

0-4-0 Porter, both = generic catalog models
2-4-2 Columbia = Baldwinn Hawaiian plantation locomotive
2-6-0 Indy =  Generic catalog version of the Columbia
4-6-0 Annie = Baldwinn Tweetsie prototype
2-8-0 Connie = Baldwinn N de M prototype
4-4-0 = restored Eureka & Palisades locomotive
2-6-0 Mogul = Baldwinn generic catalog model
Shay Heisler Climax = generic catalog models

to date only one model, the K27 has been specific to Colorado.

While a WP&Y shovelnose dismal would be really cool in LS, it would be such a big engine I doubt B'mann would want to make the investment in such a singlularly specific to one road model.

While theres nothing wrong with the new 1/20.3 side tanker aside form the fact that I already have one in 1/22.5, (I actually liked the look of the saddletanker alot more) but I would love to see a real bone tossed to us small layout guys. Something like a Forney or a Mason Bogie thats R1 capable, or a 0-6-0 tanker, or a Class A Climax.... ???

Rather than a 1:20.3 big 2-4-4 Forney like the On30 one, could we have a smaller 0-4-4 like W.W.& F. #10?  A 2-4-4 would need really broad curves.

Some day if Bachmann doesn't make it, I will have to convert an LGB 0-4-4 to 20.3:1.  It would make a smaller Forney more to my liking.

Jim

I wouldnt complain, I'm using R1s on my layout  ;)

How about the Indy as a 4-4-0?

Wade

Now THAT would be interesting!!! :o

Thats a Forney, very different from a Mogul.

What your really asking for isnt a Indy reissue, thats a 2-6-0 tendered mogul type engine, but a NEW engine based on the Indy drivetrain in large scale of Bachmann's On30 Forney

Com'on Bachmann, been asking for this since the On30 came out :-[

Look at the on-line retailers that are trying to unload these things. They're having to practically give them away! Everything sells higher and these were Spectrum engines in the same vein as the Shay, Connie and American! There simply isn't the interest!

Steve I still think it had much more to do with the Dizzie being a MODERN STANDARD GAUGE engine that just happened to sit on narrow gauge trucks, that had more to do with its unpopularity that anything else. Afterall its a very well made model.

If it had been a smaller, purpose built narrow gauge engine typical of say the 1920-40's which era most NG LSer's seam to model, say like a 13ton Brooksville critter, or a Plymouth or similar, I think it would have sold far better. Heck I know I would have BOUGHT anything Brooksville. If theres no demand then why does the HLW Mack sell like hotcakes and is the base model for countless critter models? I dont see Accucraft's Whitcolm's or Plymouth's being red tagged. The demand is there,  I do not know on what basis the decisions to market one item over another are made, I wish I did, but for for whatever reasons they didnt seam to read the market on that one...or the Vulcan.

I vote for a scaled up version of the On30 Davenport.

I agree, do it in 1/20...what the heck! They already HAVE the siderod drive brick, from the 45tonner, and the master mold from the On30 model. It would nicely complement the lower priced Porters...

Large / Re: trolley poles
December 10, 2007, 06:07:52 PM
If you mean the power pickup "trolley" pole that gets power from the overhead line (bet some of you didnt know that how "trolleys" got their name  ;D ) try the Bmann parts dept. These are sprung and can be used for power pickup.

Older non working trolleys can usually be picked up on Ebay for cheap, and is a great way to get parts like the trolley poles.

Hartland Locomotive Works also sells an overhead pantograph thats also functional as a power pick up, so did LGB, but with their recent implosion the part might be hard to find now.

LGB was also the only mass producer for overhead line poles and wiring that was relatively easy to install, but again it maight be very hard to find for reasonable prices, some overhead wiring stuff was recently on sale on Ebay and it was selling for some obscene prices.

I'm working on a steeplecab bash also and will need another trolley pole for mine also. ;)  As for the overhead lines, well, thats still up in the air.  ???
