Title: Heisler Firebox Flicker?
Post by: kejwa on August 15, 2013, 02:33:57 AM
Can the decoder which comes installed in the new On30 Stearns Heisler be configured to do Firebox Flicker or do I need to replace it with something else?

Thanks in advance for any enlightenment!

Btw, fantastic little locomotive! Thanks Bachmann!

The loco comes with two lights. My guess is you would need a third lighting function for this.
Below is from a Google search. Might not be any help.

Keith,

The SoundTraxx Bachmann OEM decoder factory installed in the On30 Heisler does not support firebox flicker.

You will need to replace the installed decoder and add two lamps to the firebox area.  SoundTraxx suggests,
The Firebox Flicker effect is improved when two lights are used, one yellow and one red or orange and each connected to a separate function output.

An aside:
While the Bachmann Spectrum On30 Heisler Configuration Variable Default list does show
CV 51 Hyperlight Effect FX5 and CV52 Hyperlight Effect FX6 as being supported.
I believe this is a documentation typo.

Click Here  (http://www.soundtraxx.com/factory/OEM_pages/bachmann/on30_heisler_bachmann.pdf) for PDF of the Bachmann Spectrum On30 Heisler Configuration Variable Default list.

SoundTraxx does not currently list an aftermarket sound decoder for the Heisler.  But check with them for an aftermarket mobile decoder if you are not interested in sound.

Yes, SoundTraxx does make decoders without sound (mobile decoder). One built to Bachmann speciation is factory installed in your On30.

It would be much cheaper to just add a second decoder.  Almost all of my locomotives have two decoders to get enough function wires for the additional lights I install.   A TCS FL2 or TL4 can add several lights (firebox, cab, etc.) for less than $20.

Unless you really have your heart set on controlling a firebox via a decoder, you might also consider using a simple $9 (for the DCC version) LED fire effect kit from Evan's Designs. I have a couple of these kits that I bought at a train show and am pretty happy with the effect. I have yet to put them permanently into a loco, only due to lack of time to devote to the project right now. But it is on my to do list and given the small size, I think it will all fit into an On30 loco fairly easily.

The simple thing to do would be the buy a couple cheap battery powered tea lights like they sell at Michaels cvs or any other store like that. Most come with a self flicking orange led. I use them all the time. They work great

This is my g scale fireman holding a lantern with one installed
