Over the weekend I decided to swap my Russian Decapod to a Vanderbilt tender. Came out great. had to do some wiring as the engine ran in the wrong direction but I think she looks great with the tender.

I, too, was having some difficulty viewing the photos. Dunno why. I could view them on my phone and iPad, but not my PCs. Weird.

The Spectrum Vanderbilt tenders are long discontinued but you can still get this from the parts department:

Might take a little detail work, removal of the toy drawbar, and its short size is best for small engines. I have one and it looks great behind the Bach Man's consolidation. It's a little too tall at the oil bunker for the mogul, where I really wanted to use it.

I really wish Bachmann would sell the tenders by themselves again.

Nice idea. For some time I have searched for e real example of a Russian Decapod with a Vandy tender, but with no luck. They all seem to have the type supplied with the model, albeit with modifications, e.g. the taller coal sides for the WM and the Erie seem to have modified some tenders. Can anyone reference a pic of a real Russian Dec with a different type of tender from the one supplied by Bachmann? Or a Russian Dec converted to oil? There must have been some tender changes over their long lives, one would think??

The Santa Fe got 3 when the took over the ORIENT IN 1929. One was scrapped with in a year, The other two had oil tenders and lasted about 5 years. They got 5 basically modernized and soup-up "Russian" that where nice looking and lasted until 1954-55
The Mopac got 8 from various sources, no. 941-948. They had the stock tender but with a really unusual oil bunker curved on the rear. One seems to have consistently used to switch the Mississippi River steam car ferry between Baton Rouge and Anchorage, Louisiana. They consistently had footboard pilots and tall deep toned 6-chime whistles.
The running boards were very different from the Bachmann Model. That's why my two are numbered 940 and 949.

Bachmann quit making Spectrum engines. In summary, the cost/profit ratio for detailed models for serious modelers wasn't as high as toy trains for kids and the seasonal market.
However, the Decapod was plagued with operational / mechanical design issues. It took me a long time to figure out what they were and get them running right .
The Spectrum engines were produced in great quantities but as their numbers slowly decrease over time I am sure they will at some point become collectible.

Really? New product announcements still show a couple of Spectrum models in HO......the Climax and the new K4.

Well that's good that Spectrum is still alive. Wasn't aware of those models being Spectrums.
What sets them apart as Spectrums then?
There were so many great Spectrum steam engines. I miss them all.
Very nice looking model, but not what I need for my Deep South Missouri Pacific controlled short line . Several years ago I stocked up on Spectrum decapods, ten wheelers, and 4-4-0's before they ran out. Really could use 5 more decapods but I don't want eBay ones ..... there's never any telling what kind of hades that "used" engines have gone through .
