I still had my old original Bachmann DC unit and I just use it for my accessory power.

Using the accessory terminals on it works fine.

The Dynamis is a good starter set, with one caveat. It is pricey to expand.

Will-

Yes, it's pricey to expand but all of the systems are. One way to beat the power upgrade cost is to use a booster other than Bachmann's unit. Bachmann's hand helds and remote units are similarly priced to other manufacturers' equipment. I personally prefer RF remote to IR but IR can work just fine in the right space (i.e., not too huge, everything visible from at least one point, etc.)
                                                                                                                                                                   -- D

I did not want to clob brands together, so I priced using all Bachmann equipment and hunted for the best  prices, I could find.

The cost would have been nearly $200 dollars higher to upgrade the Dynamis,  than replacing the Dynamis with a new DCC system .

I now have a 5 amp system that will probably handle anything I will ever have, PLUS I now can use my computer to program

all my DCC locomotives and accessories and run my layout. Over five years ago, Bachmann originally promised to upgrade the ProBox to permit

computer connection, but to the best of my knowledge has not done so even as yet. Though I really did not plan it, by not upgrading;  but

replacing the Dynamis with an entire new system I saved money and gained more capabilities than I could get expanding the Dynamis.

i'd go with the dynamis. it will grow with you,  some of the entry level dcc systems have very limited functionality, and you will quickly find that as you get more advanced they don't meet your needs. with dynamis, you should be able to get set up and running easily, then spend years discovering what its capabilities truly are.

Folks will need more information to help. DC, DCC, power to the track, connections, etc.

Have you another loco you know is working? Can you test this loco on a known working layout? LIghts? Something more than it isn't working, doesn't move.

Did you ever figure out what was causing your DD40AX to act the way it was? If not:

If you have a program track set up, did you read the decoder, if so what did it indicate, and what was the value of CV 113?  I have four "sound value" locomotives and all read the same. None of my "sound value"  locos exhibit any behavior like you are seeing(except under DC operation). I also have more than a half dozen Tsunami equipped locomotives, and all are programmed to go quiet after being idled for a period of time, like your DD40AX. But, those locos are equipped with regular Tsunami decoders,  the sound starts up as soon as any throttle is applied.

Sorry, I didn't read where he said it was the  "sound value " unit .

Did you read the manual, not the "Quick Start Guide" Read that, then toss it aside.

The "real manual is on the DVD that should have come with your Loco or on line at

Bachmann's web site under:

Sound Trax TsunamI

The page you need to read is:

Jerry,

There is a very active NCE group in Yahoo Groups. I think you will be able to find lots of

information in that group on the pros and cons of various systems.

For what it's worth, I just did a search on You Tube for "DCC Layout Automation" and found over 2 dozen videos in less than 30 minutes.

Rich-

I must be misapprehended. Is it really possible for Dynamis to run a
locomotive to a particular point and then stay there a while before
moving on? I didn't think that could be done.
                                                                    -- D

That is what I said.
I know of no system that will do what he wants. All he has to do is read the Dynamis manual and he will see that it cannot be done.

Rich

As I suggested, go to You Tube and do a search for something like HO or DCC layout automation.

I have seen numerous examples of how to automate an operation such as what he describes, but you are correct

Dynamis will not do it. Enough said here.

#26
Dynamis will not, there are some that will.

It would require a lot of work and much more than you probably have on your current layout, and this type of software.

If still interested go to this page and do a lot of reading.

http://jmri.sourceforge.net/

Also, you could go to You Tube and do a search for something like, HO layout automation.

There are also ways to program "Macros" with some dcc systems, but they also require equipment that you probably don't

have on your layout.

Like you have already been told, basically, you will likely get nearly as many opinions as you do replies.  I have three parallel lines and one switching

yard.

My system is a 5 amp system and I have one feed to each main  line  track. I have had as many as four trains(all sound) running at any one time and

have yet to have a problem. If it were me I would look at my track plan and then go with the simplest power feed that I felt comfortable with and give

that a try. If this is  sufficient, then leave well enough alone, otherwise  add more feeders.

As my switching yard is fairly small, like I said, I found one feed to each main line of track was sufficient.

Good Luck and above all ENJOY.

OK. I have done that a number of times.

Rich

Don't know what else to suggest. I have NEVER had a
Tsunami decoder fail to reset using that procedure; and I have reset several.

According to Soundtraxx, these are the instructions for resetting Tsunami decoders:
