Title: Tool suggestions?
Post by: MattC on February 07, 2011, 12:47:24 PM
Hi. I need to file down the switch points on several turnouts i have installed.
Can anyone suggest a tool I can use for this? I was thinking about a dremel,
but would welcome all suggestions! Thanks!

Be careful with the Dremel...what you remove can never be put back.  My tool of choice is a needle file.  You should be able to buy a set at a local hardware store, but if not, Micro-Mark always has them.  www.micromark.com will get you there.

i will go a bit farther than old timer and recommend that you not use the dremel. it is too large and unwieldy for the job.

inexpensive jewelers files from radio shack are more than adequate for the job. it also helps if you insert something between the point and stock rail when you file, so the point doesn't move.
