Hi All,
I'm thinking of doing a free download of posters and billboard signage that can be free to use for whoever wants to use them. I'm a graphics major so I thought I would contribute this for all who have helped me along the way in this great hobby. If there is anything you would like to see done please let me know via this thread. I will be doing all scales so everyone can use them.
So there is no misunderstanding these signs and stuff will be usable on your layout to go on buildings and your billboards etc if you do that sort of thing.
Best,
Bal

This is a wonderful and generous offer. I look forward to seeing what you come up with. There are always needs for signage and such details. Some of the toughest thing to find are small minor signs like pipeline route signs, no trespassing, business hours, employees or authorized personnel only, no parking, It's cool inside and things like that.
You don't need to make things more than once. Just make the signs in any given scale and list the percentages of increase or reduction in size needed for other scales.
Thank you for making what I'm sure will be a welcome gift.

No problem, Don. I'm going to be another sheet that people who want to use decals can. You can pick up decal printer paper at the local hobby lobby or michaels its in the hobby section, and just print it off on your home color inkjet or laser jet printer, or if you want just take it down to your local print shop. I'm also going to be doing small tow and city names for this of you who want to put a decal on your water tower if your layout has one. ;D Bal
Something like this, Mr. Don?

Just a cautionary note: Beware of copyright infringement. A lot of corporations and very protective of the use of their logos and images. Generic signs like the "Cool" one are probably safe, but others with a specific identity can be a problem.
I particularly look for signs in the 1900-1920 era.
These are more difficult to find than the "automobile" era signs of the 40's and 50's.

Here's a link to 70 odd pages of old adverts.

Thanks eb, I'm well versed in copyright stuff. But thanks for the reminder. The safe thing is that it's going to be free and that wades through most of the problems. To finish off and put the rest of the problems to rest a disclaimer will be on the download sheet as well. ;D

Yes. That's perfect. People who model the transition era will make good use of signs like this. I remember when air
conditioned stores all had these in a front window and maybe on a push bar on the door. Nobody bothers anymore
because every place has AC.

Are you doing keyline scans or just digital? Let me know if you would like to see better shots or scans. Some random pages.

ooo GG1, I will be contacting you soon! Very nice book there! ;D
Here is a sample of the 'Cool' things I came up with in about an hours worth of time. If you want any variations just say, NOTE: this is NOT to scale. Just putting up a pic to show samples. Also, these can be a flag pole hanging, side building poster/painting, and regular signage. yeah, I'm having fun. =) also, don't jump the gun with these, this wont be high resolution, that will be in the file I put up for download, this is just a crummy 96dpi sample montage image.

Searching for 'city directory' seems to bring up some useful texts from a variety of eras.
Do an Ebay Search "Antique Advertizing" You will find a lot of good ones

Searching for 'city directory' seems to bring up some useful texts from a variety of eras.
RL Polk City Directories were a useful item, for sales advertising, buying, or finding an person. Predated your yellow pages. All streets and addresses in alpha/numeric order in one section, and who lived there, the next section was names in order, and where they lived, Later a section was added with telephone numbers in numerical order who they belonged to and where they lived. Polk became the largest information gathering service in the world, specializing in demographics today, they produce mailing lists used to decide who gets what junk mail, or where a new advertisement will do the most good. I did work for RL Polk directory division making maps /mounting maps to cloth, sorting, and creating cross references for millions of file cards. But got this cut book from before that, at my graphics school when a digital graphics teacher decided soon no one would ever use key lines, or film, ever again ??? ::), IE that teacher was a pompous idiot.
I didnt pursue my graphic career long, the dishonesty expected of me in producing ads often went beyond what I felt was true and fair. That, combined with companies who basically want to design their own ad, but use your name on their "ART" drove me away. My art was truly mine again, I don't regret it. Progressive attitude towards ad design today is refreshing, but I think the
average graphic designers today, also lack the a base in "the old rules" of ad design.
The last young guy I talked to who claimed the title Graphic Designer, didn't know what a calligraphy pen was till I described it. He looked horrified. Told me he liked Uniball pens for inking. >:( Amerika at its best :'(.
I haven't forgotten about the sheets. I'm still compiling them. ;D
