Title: Trolleys
Post by: Hobbygirl on October 05, 2009, 04:30:33 PM
I had a customer today call and ask if we had a "bump'n'go" auto reversing trolley in stock.  He insists that he had a Bachmann one, till they lost it.  I know there have been some previous discussions about one done for Dept 56 but were there any other ones done?  Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

The Lionel "bump and go" required quite a bump to get it to reverse.  A few years ago I serviced a Lionel bump and go fire truck, which I believe used the same chassis, or at least the same mechanism as the bump and go trolley.  When the front bumper is pushed in, it physically shifts the mechanism into reverse.  And when the rear bumper is pushed in, it physically shifts the mechanism into forward.  The reversing lies wholly inside the vehicle.

The Bachmann reversing trolley is a different kettle of fish.  When the trolley or any other dc powered engine on the track crosses a gap, it causes an electronic circuit in the car barn to reverse the track polarity and reverse the dc vehicle running on it.  The reversing lies wholly in the track.

As far as I know, Bachmann never made a mechanically reversing trolley.  But then again, I'm a techie, not a historian, and would appreciate hearing from anyone who knows otherwise.

Dear  All,
Actually, we did make a bump-reverse trolley for Department 56, but all our current reversing streetcars are reversed electronically.
Have fun!
