Title: new Here and new to model railroading

1st I have built 1/72 models and dioramas. so I sort to have an idea. I have 2 sons that I am building a layout for on the same surface. It's the standard 4' by 8' any ideas. Also I did it on the cheap buying some items from ebay. Again any ideas

Any budget? I'd say aim for something like the ex. Nkp, a single track that runs through town and a siding for a bussiness. Simple at first but its a good start. You can always add on if you wish.  ;)

So you say you are using 1:72 scale buildings? I guess whatever floats your boat. Did you mean 1:87th scale by chance because HO scale trains are 1:87th scale. Just start off with something basic and as your knowledge of the hobby expands so can your layout. Whatever you do don't try anything to difficult or large or you may be overwhelmed. As long as the kids are having a good time anything goes.
