But an interesting choice if you REALLY want to go old timer.
It looks like the motor is the same motor used in slot cars,,or close to it.

I would not advise getting one unless you are just using it for display.

No.
They are only for display or to run at maximum speed until the motor metal gear strips a plastic gear or the poor track pickups fail to work.

I have the Bachmann John Bull that has the same motor arraignment.

i have the john bull model and it really is ment to be a display model, it can run, yes but in the end, its better off being a display model.

Yes, but as others have written, it's not really for running and certainly not for your child.  It is so tiny and delicate that he'd break it in seconds.  And these don't run well at all.  That's not surprising considering their tiny size and almost immeasurable weight.  They can look good as a display at your central station or for the very occasional excursion run, but use other equipment for day to day stuff or your son will be in tears daily.
