Title: Loud Locomotive

i purchased a HO set and upon recieving it i set it up and the locomotive is very loud, is there anything that i can do to quiet it down?

Have you broken it in yet?
If not  try this

Run the locomotive in both directions at various speeds. Forward and reverse and clockwise and counter-clockwise. The purpose is to seat all the moving parts.  I  run mine for 30-45 minutes this way. Also, make sure any parts requiring lubrication are lubed. They can "dry out" sitting on the stockroom or store shelf.

i have not tried that yet, i purchased a silicone based lube, will that work best?

That should be OK for the gears. For axles and wheel bearings use a very light oil, very sparingly.
Your local hobby shop should have one.
