Title: Engine Smoke
Post by: tarponsix on December 29, 2010, 09:15:16 PM
I have the East Broad engine and am having a problem with smoke. Turned the switch on on the front of the engine and used drops but no go. Can't find any reference in the instructions either

The smoke unit is probably burned out.  If the smoke unit is left on with no fluid in it it will burn out pretty quick. Are you the original owner?

Take a pencil with eraser and GENTLY with the eraser side push down on the smoke tube in the center of the smoke unit then give it a try.

tp6-

Try blowing gently across the stack, like you are
trying to make a whistle sound with a pop bottle.
Sometimes that will get the smoke juice down where
it's needed.

On the other hand, consider letting the smoke
alone. It's mineral oil and will end up all over your
loco and track, attracting dirt and generally mess-
ing things up.

Bachmann smoke units leave a lot to be desired at best. Some work great others not at all. You can try putting about 6-8 drops of rubbing alcohol in it and letting it soak for awhile. THIS IS WITH THE POWER OFF.  Then turn the engine over to get all of it out and then let it sit to evaporate.
AFTER IT DRIES.
Use about 5-8 drops of smoke oil down the stack to test it. It won't smoke well unless you are running a long train or running at 3/4 speed.
If you use the eraser trick be sure you don"t clog the end of the tube with rubber.
I have a few that i opened the top end of the tube and they smoke better.
