Title: New to the Game...
Post by: jroberts227 on June 17, 2007, 10:42:09 AM
Hello all,

I have recently shifted my modelling to N scale. As such, I recently purchased a N scale Spectrum 2-8-0 Consolidation that is 'DCC Ready.'

I have looked on the internet in an effort to find an appropriate decoder and have come up relatively short.

Can anyone recommend a suitable decoder/with/without sound (if that is a realistic consideration) for this locomotive.

Also, I have been looking at an NCE PowerCab DCC System to power my layout. Anyone have any thoughts about that system and it's compatability.

Any advise would be welcome.

Thank you,

Jim Roberts

The NCE PowerCab system is compatible with all Decoders From any
manufacturer.  The PowerCab system is a full featured system.

As for a decoder for the 2-8-0 check this site.

Sound might be possible with one of the LokSound decoders.
They make one of the smallest sound decoders available.  (Expensive)

You could also try: http://www.tonystrains.com/tonystips/2006/101206.htm for some decoders. Also, in the future - Tony has N Scale locos with DCC decoders installed, if you have the big bucks: http://tonystrains.com/tonystips/2001/122101.htm

The Spectrum is certainly doable, I recently installed a Digitrax DZ123 decoder in mine.  Due to the very limited space and the need to trim back the heatshrink on the decoder, I would NOT recommend this as your first installation.

The NCE PowerCab is a nice unit for a smaller layout.  I really like mine.
