Title: Crossover turnouts
Post by: lancer144 on February 01, 2011, 07:27:38 AM
I'm considering buying a couple of crossover turnouts to use instead of using four conventional turnouts to achieve bi-directional transitions from two parallel tracks. I can't find any information on the dimensions of the crossover turnouts. Can anyone tell me how long they are and how far apart the tracks are? I have two parallel tracks, one using 22" radius bends and one inside it using 18" radius bends.

Also if I buy DCC crossover turnouts, is each individual turnout in the set separately programmable or do they both operate together?

Thirdly, where's the best place online to buy DCC track components? I live in Australia, so it needs to be a retailer who will ship overseas.

Thanks in anticipation.

Dear lancer,

Here is part of an earlier thread:

Full Max built a simple concentric oval 4x8 layout with a R and L crossover, a circle of 22"R curves, a circle of 18"R curves, a bunch of 9" straights, two 9" straight terminal re-railers, plus two 3" fitter straights to widen the inner (18"R) oval.

For track piece dimensions, I recommend that you download the Anyrail.com layout CAD program.  It's free for the first 50 pieces and very easy and fun to learn.

Hope this helps.

Most of the turnout manufacturers provide accurate scaled templates that can be photocopied for use in layout planning and actual roadbed mock-up. I suggest that you select a brand of turnout and give this a try.
