Title: L&N Hummingbird series
Post by: Floridasteamer on April 18, 2011, 09:06:26 AM
My Dad came home from WWII on the Hummingbird and then worked for L&N for a number of years until he was injured. I have a collection of several of the cars but can not find any of the early type engines with the Hummingbird colors. Can anyone help me locate some in O scale/gauge?

Nice photo here http://www.lnrailroad.net/louisvillenashville020.htm (http://www.lnrailroad.net/louisvillenashville020.htm)

I'm not a diesel guy but appears to be an early F unit.   I'm sure someone else will chime in.

There's a nice history of the Humming Bird and its sister train, the Georgian, at http://www.historicrailpark.com/hummingbirdgeorgian.html.  According to the narrative, the locomotives were E7s.

A little digging revealed L&N 781 as an E7A.
Almost impossible for us normal folk to tell the difference from a front on picture.

It looks like you may have to do a major repainting and lettering job if you are looking for O scale E7 locos in L&N colors.  A search of this site as well as Walthers turned up lots of O scale E7 and E8 locos, but none of them L&N.

Thanks for the links and info. Looks like I have my work cut out finding existing engines but I'll keep looking.
