Title: Baldwin 4-4-0 Sound Cam???
Post by: LenTRaley on June 06, 2011, 12:51:44 AM
The Bachmann Spectrum Baldwin 4-4-0 is reviewed in the current issue of Model Railroader. The reviewer states that the model comes with a sound cam that accurately times the steam chuffs to the turning of the drivers. If this is true, it is a first for a Bachmann HO scale locomotive. I can find nothing in the Bachmann literature that indicates that the model actually comes with a sound cam. Can anyone confirm that the reviewer's comment in MRR is true?

Thanks and be well,

Len Raley

None of my Bachmann locos have sound cams.

The synchronization between wheels and chuff sound that can be achieved with Tsunami decoders with BEMF control turned on is enough to convince almost any observer that the Tsunami equipped locomotive has a sound cam even when it does not.  No chuffing before the locomotive starts to move.  No silent running at even the slowest speeds.  And four chuffs per revolution, at least at low speeds where checking sync with eyes and ears is possible.  In other words, none of the three common clues that indicate a lack of sound cam.
