Title: Metal Couplers for Bachmann Silver Series Freight Cars
Post by: andylvtrains on September 10, 2011, 01:36:51 PM
Is there a metal coupler that fits the Bachmann Silver Series Freight Cars?  Kadee #5 or #148 seem a bit too thick, and require replacing (or filing) the gear box.

Results may vary I suppose, but it has been my experience that the Kadee whisker spring couplers (148 or 158) fit in all Bachmann coupler boxes.  That being said, on one occasion I recall using a flat needle file and brushed just a few gentle strokes down the middle of the coupler box lid.  That created enough room for the metal coupler to freely swing.

Another choice:  it is possible to file and burnish the Kadee coupler shank itself.  Doesn't take much.

Regards,

Jonathan

It has been my experience that burnishing all Kadee couplers before installation helps avoid a lot of problems. A squirt of Kadee Grease'm or other graphite lube will also help with those sticky couplers.

andy-

A quick dressing with a fine file will take care
of any flash which might impede operation.
