Title: Kitbashing a small On30 caboose into a short flat car
Post by: canpac on November 24, 2011, 07:39:00 AM
To all the bashers out there.......Has anyone ever attempted to convert Bachmann's small On30 cabooses into short flat cars ? Be interested in any experiences or ideas you might have had or have.

Canpac,

Flat cars are fairly simple, I have seen flatcars bashed into work cabooses but it seems like a waste to bash a caboose into a flatcar, I haven't seen to many flatcars with caboose style steps, it seems to me all you really need is a set of freight trucks and couplers and you could build a flat car from scrap.

It's much easier to make a caboose out of a short flat car than the other way around. Scratch building a flatcar would be easier than trying to convert a caboose. There's a thread over on RR Line Forums that you might find useful. It's about building an 18' boxcar, but if you stop building after you have made the frame and decked it, you'll have a flat car!
