In model railroading, we are forced to make many compromises.  One of them is clearance.  It the rolling stock doesn't touch the buildings or get hit by passing trains, you have enough clearance.  In the real world,  you would have to have a sign ""No Room for Man on Side of Car".

Get an NMRA standards gauge.  You can buy one from their website.
