Title: GE 70 ton diesel disassembly
Post by: edpb on June 17, 2012, 04:36:44 PM
My two new GE 70 ton diesels are very noisy.  I'm trying to disassemble one to clean and lube the drive.  I have broken two of the tabs holding the cab to the chassis, but that does not help.  It appears that the railings must come off first, but they are glued on.  I did get the bottom cover off one truck.  A screw through the box between the tanks underneath will come out, but that does not loosen anything.  The exploded diagram does not help much.  Can anyone help?

Very easy. Remove the couplers.
Remove two screws in the fuel tank.
Remove shell.

I assume you did not look at the diagram for this loco. I just did . It is very clear.
You cannot be ham handed with this stuff. Take your time.
Next time, ask first. Helps prevent damage.

Thanks, Rich, for your replies.  A phone call came in while I was answering and my reply timed out.

I think my loco is not the same as the one you described.  But, with your encouragement I have taken off one part from underneath (held on by one screw) and found four more screws. I think that two of those hold the frame to the hood and I'm going to remove those.  More later --
