Title: Union Pacific 806 -- again
Post by: elcentro on August 09, 2012, 02:51:19 PM
Unfortunately the dead motor is the unloved pancake variety --

any way to bring it back to life or replace it?

Thanks

probably cheaper to replace it. most analog engine's are selling on e-bay for next to nothing.

Elcentro

The older pancake motor 4-8-4's are not very reliable or good runners. The best option is to buy a newer version of your engine. You may find some useful information here.

And the truck with the motor was the only truck to pick up power from the rails. I believe many, maybe not all, had rubber traction tires on the wheels.
Diesels today pickup on both trucks.

I have seen the pancake motors on ebay, but you can see a lot of old stuff on ebay.

was that 806 the union pacific gp40? if so, you can get a similar locomotive new for under $50, the new one will have all wheels drive and pickup. it will run much better than the one you have.

you could probably find the parts to repair the one you have, but even then you will have a poor running  locomotive with a motor which will probably wear out quickly. the pancake motors had plastoc bearings that melt if the motor gets hot enough. when they melt, the motor shaft gets out of alignment and the motore seizes up.

Jward : the engine they were dicussing was  an  eight-four-eight steam engine . Your are right about GP-40s being reasonable priced though  J2.
