Get an Atlas track planning book and then build your layout with the concept that trains and trolleys share the track.   Used to happen all the time.

You can also do some things with streetcars, you can't with regular trains, that is some really tight radius curves, for example turning through a city street intersection.  One of my favorite streetcar lines built an amusement park a few miles away from Cumberland, MD to give the locals more reasons to ride the streetcar.

Have fun,
Charles

1. think of an era
2. look for a place during that era
3. model that place
this is good because you are not aimlessley building things
and then
find a basic track plan
try a double loop
get a basic idea and go for it
need trolleys?
bachmann has a highly detailed trolley set
i dont have trolleys on my layout so
just ask google trolley layout online
itll spark your imagination
you'd be surprised the amount of deatail you can put into a 5 by 8
