My Bachmann GP40 measures 4 1/2 inches length including the couplers.  One standard straight track should hold your locomotive by itself.  Add an end of track bumper section and this should hold most 4 axle diesel locomotives.  Longer is better for more flexibility, but minimum would work.  If space is a premium for your diesel shed, add an inch or two for the end of your building.  The important thing is starting a layout.  Model railroading serves me well as a stress reliever fun hobby.  Google N Scale Forums to pull up other blog sites relating to this hobby.  Fall and Winter have the most train shows; attend any in your area and you will be glad that you did.
