Title: installing new couplers on n- scale GP- 40
Post by: drkelley70 on February 28, 2015, 04:28:33 PM
I have a N scale GP- 40  #3500  and it needs to have the couplers intalled.  I would like to change from the knuckle couples and go with  a coupler that will work with the magnetic decouples on the track.  Any suggestions.

If this is a Bachmann loco, this is what Micro-Trains recommends if you use their conversion kits:

Bachmann Diesel EMD GP-40 (w/ #9722-1 long shank coupler assy) Use: 1134 (001 33 031)
Bachmann Diesel EMD GP-40 (w/ split 1 pc. draft gear box) Use: 1129 (001 30 013)
Bachmann Diesel EMD GP-40 (w/ diecast draft gear box) Use: 1128 (001 30 012) or 1129 (001 30 013)

The number in parens is MT's new part number, the 11xx is the old one.

I have an Alaska RR GP40 loco, part number 63569.  Trying to convert to MT couplers. The conversion charts seem to recommend 1134 (001 33 031), but the pictures of the kit do not appear to be what's needed.  The current coupler is a simple whisker type long shank coupler.  Any suggestions?

Thank you.
