I've added a short line to my layout and really can't decide on the engine to use for it. I was thinking a 4-6-0 or 2-8-0, maybe even a 2-6-0. No matter what one I choose i'm gonna have to do some kind of modifications to it. I've even thought of using a Russian Decapod.
I picked up some Strasburg Railroad cars, 2 Coaches and 2 box cars, and it would run point to point, the engine would not be turned at each end, just swap between ends of the train. some of the trains would be mixed with a LTL box car added(2nd box car is for interchange traffic)

If you want to match the Strasburg, they use/used a Baldwin 2-6-0, 2-10-0, 4-8-0, 4-6-0, and 0-6-0, a Porter 0-6-0T, and Juniata 4-4-0 and 4-4-2. As well as a few other odds and ends, and a couple of diesels.

have you thought about using a ge 44 or 45 ton diesel for your short line?

I've got a 45 ton switcher and it crossed my mind, I'm not a fan of the 44 ton switcher.
If you want to match what Strasburg has, you are going to have a hard time. even though Bachmann has a 2-6-0, a 4-6-0 2-10-0, 0-6-0, and a 0-6-0t, they do not match strasburg locomotives. You already have a 2-8-0. I would go with it.

Just trying to find something that will look right. I'd love to get a 4-8-0 but only ones out there are in brass.
as for the engine type I'd have to get one eather way, the 2-8-0 BLW is just filling in, i'm not gonna repaint that one.
I seem to remember. 0-6-0 on the Strasburg.

At one point i thought about using a proto 0-6-0. Price on those things canceled that idea tho.
The current Strasburg operational roster for steam are the 2-6-0 No. 89, 4-8-0 No. 475, and 2-10-0 No. 90. No. 31, the 0-6-0 is being shopped but does not have a high priority right now. No. 90 is also currently in the shop for running gear work, including turning the driver tires (I took the shop tour this past weekend so this is current info). The Bachmann Alco 2-6-0 with the centered headlight is a decent stand-in for the 89. As noted, there is nothing except brass to match the 4-8-0. The No. 90 is a larger and more modern loco than the Russian. There was at least one brass import of the Baldwin decapod. Russian decapods did serve on shortlines, notably the Gainesville Midland down south. Besides the 44-tonner, Strasburg also has an SW-9 which they usually use for freight traffic. And there is also a Plymouth. They are also working slowly (funding issues) on rebuilding Long Island RR 4-6-0 No. 39, as dupe of the PRR G-5's.
In long years past they also operated a PRR 4-4-0 and 4-4-2, both now in the museum across the road, and a Reading Camelback 0-4-0, which is way in the back of the shop line.
