Title: Proper Bachmann motor for IHC/Mehano DCC conversion
Post by: Traindude51 on July 18, 2015, 03:07:50 PM
Hello,  I am looking to replace a worn motor in a IHC/Mehano 4 6 2 with a Bachmann motor that is appropiate for DCC sound conversion. Would someone tell me what motor would be the right one. A model number would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your replies.

If you desire a Pacific with sound then you are probably better off buying one that already has it installed in this case. Your locomotive may be of a spilt frame design and the installation of a replacement motor may be difficult. Do you know if your locomotive has a split frame design or if it has tender pick up and how much space is available in the tender?

If it's the purple box "Premier" edition, it's DCC friendly and the tender is already set up for adding a speaker and sound decoder.

If it's the older, not "Premier" version, decoder installation in the 4-6-2 is very similar to the 2-8-2 installation shown here:

You need to get the dimensions of the existing motor, including shaft diameter, to figure out which motors can be used to replace it.
