Title: cantilevered abutment
Post by: billgiannelli on January 14, 2016, 02:46:59 PM
due to my screwy layout I have a bridge coming to an abutment over another lower level track.
Is there such a thing as a "cantilevered" abutment?
thanks
Bill

Need a little more description and/or a diagram of the situation.

the 2 tracks, high and low run parallel.
The lower track runs along side a "cliff" made of foam.
The cliff angles out over the lower track.
The higher track comes to the cliff face over the lower track.
does any of that make any sense?????
thanks
Bill

have you thought about cutting the cliff back at that point and adding another span to the bridge? if necessary, it is fairly common to run a single girder above the lower tracks perpendicular to the bridge, and have your bridge spans rest upon it.

In this case I would consider, for the upper track, either bridge supports, piers, bents etc., or even a viaduct over a tunnel for the lower track.
Girder Bridge is way too long without additional support.
Is it possible to build the land form up, toward the camera, and have a short truss bridge instead?
This way a tunnel for the lower track would look more appropriate as the upper track would be on the land form, no bridge necessary.
Cantilevered abutment made from stone cliff face does not work and is not natural.
You may want to re-think your choice of bridge.
Just IMO.

I for one love the elevation gain you have on this bridge.
