Title: New Railroad...etc...
Post by: Ken Huck on April 26, 2020, 06:57:30 PM
Thought I'd just start a new string every time I put something up because of 'time expired' issue I get using Facebook
as my photo host.

First up, remake of older trestle and tunnel portal.

...A lot more blending in to do...

Here's one behind this trestle.

I made the rock formations using crumpled up aluminum foil as a plaster mold.
Nobody goes back there anymore.

Here's an abandoned stamp mill...got closed down...

Since the shutdown, the wildlife has started to return.

Thanks for looking.

Ya' know Ken. Wiser minds than mine have said that those hand rails and truss rods like that could be replaced with metal ones.  :)

Tin foil rock molds... genius! Rocks are my nemesis. I appreciate the inspiration. Thanks for sharing some more photos.

Jonathan

I'm glad I'm modeling the coastal prairie back home.  No rocks.

Rocks are one of the most interesting aspects. I would love to figure out how to model anticlines and synclines convincingly.

From the looks of this, all it would take is a comb wtih a tooth or two missing dragged along the cliff face while the plaster was still soft...

First get some old ceiling tile and break them apart.  Stack them together and paint with a thick coat
of latex/acrylic paint.

Cast an RTV mold of it.

Make plaster copies and color with your favorite earth tone

I did enjoy your rock face tutorial. That's some very educational work.  Something I will come back to when it's time for rocks on my layout.  Thanks for sharing, Ken.  Great stuff.

Jonathan
