I've read about Bachmann releasing a 36 AND 38 ton Shay, as well as the 55 ton 3 truck. I have the 36 and 55, but what exactly was different about the 38. Even on eBay, I always see 36 but never 38.
I have the explanation on my site:
https://elmassian.com/index.php/large-scale-train-main-page/motive-power-mods-aamp-tips/bachmann-motive-power/shay
Basically, all 3 versions were the same, the 3rd version came with metal trucks and was called 38 ton, vs the 36 ton.
Greg
Did the boxes actually say 38? I never see them n eBay.

Hope this clarifies things! Take Care,

Bill, have you ever found any quick spotting guides to disgusting the 2 or 3?
I've changed to standard gauge prototypes and 1:29, so my Shays are long gone (my wife loved them)
Greg
Both in UK. But first I've ever see on eBay, at least in my searches.
Boy, my searches are off. Even when I search Bachmann 82197 or Bachmann 82198, I get no hits.
Edit, changed to world wide and then get them.
Greg, please clarify your question!
Don't you love spell check Bill!!! :P
should have been "distinguishing" between versions, not "disgusting"....
Bill, have you ever found any quick spotting guides to distinguishing (between) the 2 or 3 (versions)?
I have pictures of the shays somewhere, but I rely on the item number, lettering, and the number of screws in the trucks. 81198 and 81199 from 1996 would be considered the first version while 81196 and 81197 would be the second version. The 821xx would all be the third.
Thanks Bill, added that to my spotting guide:
