Title: DCC 4-4-0 Suddenly Stopped Working
Post by: Chris K on March 23, 2025, 09:11:18 PM
Hello Forum,

I have a DCC 4-4-0 which I have been running for a couple years. I use the Ez Command system and I have another Bachmann 2-6-0 DCC engine. Recently, the 4-4-0 suddenly stopped moving, but lights and sound commands still work. The 2-6-0 still works no problem, on the same layout with the same controller.

The 4-4-0 will spin the motor for a few seconds, then stop. If I "reset" the speed dial on the controller, the motor will spin for a second, then stop. Each subsequent "reset" of the dial results in the motor spinning for less and less time before stopping. It will hum/vibrate softly after it stops.

I opened up the 4-4-0 and applied DC power directly to the motor, and it spins no problem. There do not appear to be any loose wires. The engine and contacts are clean.

I'm confused as to why it would randomly stop working.

Any help?

Stuff happens...could be a short somewhere or your decoder took a dump...Let the mercy of trial and error begin...

You should take the 4-4-0 to a layout with a more advanced DCC system that can manipulate cv values, and do a cv8=8 reset.  This cannot be done on your EZ command.  The owner of this layout should know how to do a cv8 reset.

You should know how to do this anyway if you're going to be doing DCC Model Railroading, after you acquire a more advanced DCC system, which you really should do if you're going to pursue more involved operations.

You get a look at that video yet?  I haven't yet but it appeared to be one that addresses your issue.

Of course, with YouTube videos, you have to remember that there's 1 million people out there that think they are experts on everything, talk too much,  and ramble on and on without ever getting to the point. With or without poorly aimed and wobbly videos.  So you have to hunt some to find the right one, but I know that a good one is there.
