Title: Help with nail sizes for EZ Track
Post by: neversimon on June 11, 2025, 09:55:07 AM
Hello, I'm trying to find the right nails to secure HO EZ Track.  I think I need #19 nails, but all the hardware store has are 1/2 inch long and I need longer.

I want to put foam board over top of my plywood base and I need the nails securing my EZ track to go through the foam board and into the plywood to secure the track properly.

Can anyone tell me where to find #19 nails that are at least 1 inch long or even longer?

I found #18 nails that are 30mm (1.18" long), but I'm not sure if their 1.2mm diameter is too thick?  Can anyone tell me if these are too thick to use with HO EZ Track?

Thanks!

Rather than nails, have you considered using double sided mounting tape to secure the track to the foam? It's faster, and easier to remove than nails if changes to the track are needed.

Hi Len, thanks for the advice.  Eventually I'd want to glue the track down, but I don't want to do that until I'm happy with my layout so I was thinking nails, but the double sided tape suggestion is a good one.  Have you done this?

My only concern is that the tape may allow the track to wobble subtly and not hold it down as firmly as a nail or glue, which could result in instability for the train, especially around turns.  You think it will be ok?

Thanks!

Yes, I've done it on some portable display layouts using EZ-Track. And it worked quite well. You want to use Mounting Tape, not Carpet Tape. Mounting Tape holds well, but it's not nearly as impossible to remove as carpet tape if you need to move track around.

I'm surprised that the Bach Man does not offer a suitable nail.

Dear All,
The Bach-man uses outdoor carpet tape with excellent results.
Have fun!

Here's a suggestion that's maybe way out there, that is, not in the ballpark, but it works for me.

In the sewing community, there are sewing pins that I use that are 2 inches and in some cases one can find them even longer.  EZ track from my experience produces no movement on straight sections of track.  My experience has found that the track will move in curves.  This is where I employ the straight pins in the curves and at the EZ track connectors.  If I'm too lazy to place the pins right at the track connector, I will place them at the edges of the ballast of the curve.  If you're thinking that the head of the pin will interrupt the image.  I actually place a piece of brush that hides the pin head, and the pin head holds the brush in place, along with the track.  No glue is used.  The base of my layout is foam, so it's fairly easy to insert sewing pins.
My emphasis is to use as little glue as possible.  Why, because I consistently like to change my layout.  But that's me.

Maybe this suggestion might be of help.... or not.

I will submit that the double-sided tape suggestion is one that I'll look into.

I have plastic road bed track too on the layout that I know is going to last two years or less. So I want to be able to take the track apart and bring it with me to the next house to use on the next layout, this track is not cheap and it would be a shame to pitch it when it's perfectly good.

I spray painted my track brown including the roadbed, and that improves the appearance a lot, but I still want to put ballast on it.  Unfortunately, I'll have to ballast each piece of track separately or the process of gluing the ballast down will also glue the sections togetHer
